Journal nanomanc's Journal: About me 1
It's a Friday night, maybe I should be out but instead I'm starting a journal on slashdot. That should tell you most of the story. Maybe I shouldn't tell you too much. It would just spoil the perfect image you have of me. Maybe you're the psycho my mommy warned me about? WTH, it's fun keeping interesting company.
Work is the IT department of a voucher company in the SE of the UK. Home is a shared house a short walk away. Life is
A slightly-sorted tag-soup of what tickles my boat would look something like: physics, software, electronics, simon & garfunkle, smokin', baked goods. For some reason I just didn't get the rave culture. Give me hippys any day of the week.
I spent most of my twenties with a woman so I must have learned something about them, erm...what about..? nope, I've got nothing. Oh well, at least I have my skills and sanity, although it's downhill from now on for those. I think I may have peaked.
Life-changing Software:
- GNU tools - thanks RMS et al, wish I was there.
- Linux - thanks Linus, kernel devs.
- Debian & Ubuntu - Nice work Ian/Mark; the right way and the easy way.
- VM Ware - it should be a sin it's so good.
I came from the service engineer side of things, having spent too many years trying to understand MS software from the 'Power User' perspective. It was too difficult to grok the critical mass I needed to evolve. Well, I've got what I asked for. My life is a Dilbert comic.
Favourite software:
- Python
- Zope
- Firefox
Not been at this job long, but I'm just finishing off a web-app to bridge the gap from spreadsheet-hell to the bells-and-whistles CRM I've inherited. Got a VM/SAN deployment coming up and I'm sure I recall an 'ask slashdot' about the best partitioning scheme. After that, it looks like I'll be doing some Java. Then I plan to have a nervous breakdown.
Life-changing websites:
- slashdot
- thedailywtf
- all the rest

nanomanc is my handle, nanotechnology my future, nano is my editor of choice. Yet today I had to use vi. Woe is me.
