Comment Winds of winter release date (Score 1) 238

The worst clickbait is still coming from all these wannabee news sites having nearly daily articles with the words "Winds of winter", "release date" and "GRRM" in them, usually along the lines "while the release date of Winds of winter is not known yet, yadda yadda yadda". They all trigger my google news alerts but I have learned to ignore anything coming from sites such as International business times AU, HalleIS, AirHerald, Christian times (why would they actually bother at all with something so unholy?) and a few more.

Comment where are the systematic uncertainties? (Score 1) 62

As I could not find it on the arXiv (http://xxx.lanl.gov/), nor inspire (http://inspirehep.net) nor any official statement from CERN I assume this is just a preliminary result so far. Even as such I would expect some kind of estimate on the systematic uncertainties which go with this measurement. Without that it is not particularly relevant yet as those uncertainties could be substantial. So at the moment it is premature to talk about a discrepancy with the standard model (nor the previous measurements).

Comment Why not both (Score 1) 659

In my view the answer has to be both for the intermediate to long term future. Electricity for the shorter distances/commute and hydrogen based electricty (via fuel cells) for the longer distances. In the light of the future energy mix to be mostly or entirely renewable an often heard concern is about the large fluctuations of wind and solar energy and the related under- and over-capacities for the grid. If eventually more renewable energy supply were available than needed most of the time, the excess could be used to produce hydrogen and store or distribute it. Your car will even become your backup home power supply if a storm has disconnected the power line and you are waiting for the utilities company to fix it. On the other hand that probably means less ice cream consumption during power outages...
