I was 18 and headed off to start my first Computer Science degree when I read this fascinating book. Gave me a lot of insight into the "Hardy Boys" who made the computers that my software ran on. I still remember the Vermont quote 44 years later.

I usually only need to use the subway to get around the city but I'll hunt down the V3 line.

My power went out at 12:32pm and back on at 6:17pm. The city handled it well, everyone was calm. Stores were running on flashlights and cash, cops at every major intersection directing traffic, airport apparently functioning normally. It took another 4 hours for my fiber Internet to come back up.

I'm potentially one of the affected customers here in Spain. I'll see how long it takes them to contact me. Customer service is apalling and fees would make the Mafia blush. I'm told by locals here in Barcelona that all Spanish banks are bad, so there's no alternative.

This is right up there in coincidences! I come across this article while I'm watching the DOOM movie on Thai TV channel MONO29. This channel shows English movies from a while back (probably because they're cheap) and also things like Chinese legend movies. I remember playing DOOM back in the day and couldn't change the channel, remembering how bad the movie is.

When I was a CS TA in Canada back in the '80s, students had to print out their code and the results of the run and drop it in a locker by midnight on the due date. The TAs would read the code and the run result on paper and grade based on correctness, algorithm efficiency, commenting, data structures, etc. We didn't have the web to copy/paste code snippets or entire solutions or a vast array of libraries. I think we better understood what was going on in the code and it made us better coders and debuggers.
