Comment Siats terrorized tyrannosaurs (Score 1) 1

The coolest thing about this to me is that Siats was what kept the size of T.rex and other tyrannosaurs down to the size of large dogs during their reign, maybe for 30 million years.

Untamed Science did a nifty little video about Siats & interviewed co-discoverer Lindsay Zanno: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCZQGmb_pZk

Also, my bosses would probably like me to point out that Lindsay Zanno is a researcher at my museum, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences-- she holds a joint appointment with NCSU, and the research on Siats was carried out in our Paleontology & Geology Lab.

There's an overview of Siats facts on our website: http://naturalsciences.org/siats.

Submission + - New Dinosaur 'Siats Meekerorum' Discovered In Utah (ibtimes.com) 1

minty3 writes: Named Siats meekerorum, after the man-eating monster from the Ute tribal legend, the fossil belongs to a species of giant meat eaters known as carcharodontosaurs and is the second one discovered in North America.

“This thing is gigantic,” Lindsay Zanno, a paleontologist at North Carolina State University, who discovered the species, said. “There’s simply nothing even close in this ecosystem to the size of this animal that could’ve been interpreted as an apex predator.”
