Journal munger1102-18's Journal: What are our goals? 20

In preparation for your final project, the portfolio essay, I'd like you to write about the class goals. Pick one of the five goals from the class Web site, and write about it. What do you think it means? What are some examples of class work we have done to learn about that goal? Have we learned enough about to fully understand the goal? What more does Mr. Munger need to do to ensure that we know what we need to know for this class?

Post at least two comments on this topic by the end of the week. At least one of your comments should be a response to someone else's comment.

What are our goals?

  • I think that a goal I have accomplished throughout this class is that of reading argumentative papers and establishing things such as claims, reasons, evidence, and establishing warrants to these reasons, as well as the acknowledgements of the paper. I think Mr. Munger has done a good job in teaching this goal, because I understand it well.
    • i agree with this. I can now look at a paper and determine what it is that the writter is trying to get across. I can also pick out the reasons and evidence, and warrents were a little tricky, but, im catching on. Mr. munger has done a good job in teaching this to at least me and lyndsay.
    • I agree with you. Mr. Munger did a good job with this goal.
    • I totally agree with you . This class goal is accomplished thougth the lecture. I think Ms.Munger is really a good teacher.
    • i agree. before mr. munger tought this, i had no idea what a claim or anything was. i think the lectures were very informative and i feel like i have a pretty good understanding of the information taught.
  • The goal that I know that we completed without a doubt would be,"You will be able to evaluate the credibility of sources (academic and popular; primary, text-based, and electronic) used as evidence in an argument." When I was in 1101, all I would use was random internet sights, never questioning if it was credible or not. Since I've been in this class, I try to see who makes these websites or if there can be some kind of bias. On Friday, I think that was the day we spent a whole day looking at sources with
  • One of the goals that I've learned in this class is also reading argumentative essays. It was very interesting learning to identity claims, evidence, reasons, conclusions, acknowledgements and especially the warrants. Having learned how to identify these crucial points of an argumentative essay, I find it a whole lot easier to read one and actually understand it. I also learned how to properly do a works cited page and especially an annotated bibliography. Overall, I learned a lot of things I didn't lea
  • I feel i am beter able to make an argument now. I understand all of the things that go into making a good argument. You must make it relate to the audience, and understand both sides before you are able to argue for one side. This also plays into learning about the different claims that can be used to support your argument.
    • I feel I can make an argument better now also. I know what elements to put into the essay and feel more comfortable with putting in an opposing view without throwing off the subject of my paper.
  • I feel I have a better understanding of what sources will help me support my view of an essay better. I know where, what, and why to look for peer reviewed articles and can look at my sources and get the information I need to write the best paper I can.
  • i think the most important thing i have learned is how to find claims in arguments and how to establish claims of my own. this starts your paper off the right way. its also important to use good evidence from reliable sources to back up your claim.
    • I totally agree. I find that learning this method creates the format for the paper, making it a lot easier to write once you have established the claim, reasons, evidence to support your claim and the acknowledgement which force the writer to examine the opposing point of view!

I have learned what the argument is. I realized about the relation among claim, reason, evidence, and acknowledgement. I wanted to improve my Enlish, I do my best and I went the Writing Resource Center everweek. But I feel I need more time to practice English. I think Ms.Munger is a good teacher because I understand his lecture.
  • When we had to establish a "claim of value" based on advertising, I really understood much better what we were looking for as far as claims, evidence, reasons, acknowledgements and warrants. These were really fun and interesting and made me look at advertising in a different way. I understand the use of different strategies in getting your message across to an audience who is relating to catch phrases or a picture as a form of evidence or even argument.
  • I think the things that have been discussed the most, are the things that go into making an argument paper an argument. The claim, evidence, order, types of arguments. All of these have been discussed in detail. One of the things that I have gained out of this class is that i need to practice this things so i can make my papers stronger.
