Journal munger1102-18's Journal: Best War Coverage? 24

Check out the Gulf War coverage over at The Onion, "America's Finest News Source." Is this not the best coverage of the war yet seen?

P.S. Just in case you don't figure it out right away, the entire Web site is a joke. What do you think? Is the war on Iraq a joking matter? Is this site funny? Is it appropriate to make jokes in times of war? Please make two comments to the class journal by the end of this week.

Best War Coverage?

  • I believe that some humor in times of war or saddening events is a positive thing to help people cope with these types of situations. Although there is a fine line to walk between bringing humor to the situation and out right mocking it.
    • I agree that some humor is okay. We need something to bring up Americans spirits in this hard time. There of course is other ways of doing this but humor is a good way if not taken too far.
    • I agree that using humor is a way to bring up Americans' spirits during the war. We need something to help get us through the hard times. There are other ways to do this as well humor is just a part of it. I also think it is okay as long as it is not taken too far.
    • I agree. There is a fine line between humor and mocking. But I do think that laughter is good, during a messy and stressful situation, because sometimes you just need a good laugh. But it doesn't take away from the actual situation.
    • I agree with your comment. I think in war time the humor is not just a humor. It make something serious to us. We should think about war. War is very horrible and many children die.
  • I believe when humor is used in ways that involve the lives of people it is not funny. Using humor when it comes to people dieing in war is not at all amusing to me, because that is what makes war so horrible.
    • i agree with you. if it was the editor of the "onions" son out there or brother, or whatever, i am sure it would not be funny at all. this is really stupid if you ask me.
  • i find the page very funny. it show the softer side of what we are actually doing and what is going on. yes it is make something light of a very serious situation, but it is a very understanding joke
    • I agree with you that it is a "very understanding joke." This humerous site shows the softer side of the goriness and horror of the war. During war time, we need some humor (and laughter that goes with it) to go on with life. Of course, there are those, people who are involved with this war, who could find this site ridiculous.
    • i agree 100 percent. people need to have something to laugh and smile about it these times. people shouldnt take this so serious. everybody realizes this is a serious situation so its pretty funny to read stuff that some people wirte.
    • I totally agree, it is a great stress reliever to be able to laugh when you feel like crying. There is no disrepect intended, just some insights into how rediculous our government must seem to many others right now.

I don't know if i really find this all to funny, but i also understand. Some people use humor to express themselves. If you take it lightly than i guess it is funny, but in this situation i don't think many people would do that. I think many people would think this is offensive.
    • I don't know if i find it funny. but it's not really my kind of humor. i like parts of it, but i don't really find others amusing. i'm not big on dry humor.
  • i think this site is pretty funny. I know that its making light of a touch situation that our country is going through. but i still find it humorous.
  • Like some of my classmates, I think that humor is needed during war times to destroy the horror, stress, and sadness of it. Everyone needs a good laugh now and then, especially during war time. As for people being offended by this, well, people are always being offended by SomethinG, so might as well be this. At least, some people enjoy this.
  • I agree, humor can help us to cope with serious and upsetting situations such as war. however, enything mocking the loss of american lives would be stepping over the line.
    • Very good point on the mocking. I think that it is wrong to do, but if viewed by the right audience it can be very funny, that is all I feel they were tryin to do with this site.
  • I think laughter sometimes helps to relieve a painful and sticky situation. But it is only funny to an extent, and the humor can be taken to far, especially when it comes to innocent people being killed.
  • i think the site is pretty funny. i have been here before and read some of there comments on drinking. i think that a little humor is always good in tough times. it always help to laugh a little bit.
  • Although war is serious business, it is necessary to be able to laugh at ourselves during troubled times. What makes America the great nation that it is, is that we are free to do just that. We are free to poke fun at our politicians and our government, but just in jest...the reality is that the majority of people are in favor of Bush and his decision to go to war.
  • Humor has always helped me cope with hard times. But you also have to consider others peoples feelings towards the event and make sure you aren't offending them.
  • I do not understand this site exactly but it is very funny. War is very serious situation. I think this kind of joke make us thinking about this situation over and over again.
  • I think that the style of reporting used on the site was really good. It kind of seems to be a slap to the face for those people bent on reporting seriously. I have seen some attempts at humor in reports viewed on tv. I think this should be sent to the troops over there, showing them that there can be a lil good in the world.
  • i think this is not funny at all. i think it is direspectful to the Americans who are figting for our country by making light of the subject. it is not funny at all and making jokes about it will upset more people than it will put at ease.

Too much is not enough.
