Journal munger1102-18's Journal: Can we improve our bodies? 25

This is another possible topic for Essay 4. I'd like everyone to post at least two comments on this topic. You can either post a new response or respond to someone else's comment.

An article in slate.com suggests that modern surgical techniques can do almost anything to improve our bodies--not just surgery to make us look better, but also stronger, faster, smarter. Should such surgical techniques be pursued? Are some of them better than others? Should they be better regulated by the government? Should they be covered by health insurance? Here's your chance to speak out!

Can we improve our bodies?

  • i think that if theses surgeries are put into practice then it is going to be a boring world. everyone will try to be perfect and it will be dumb. sports won't be the same b/c it isn't the athlete's hard work and athletc gift that makes them so good, it is technology. i think this surgery is not good.
    • I agree completely. Humans are all so different now. If everyone made their kids skinny tall and athletic there would be no Mike Jordan or no Cindy Crawford. Everyone would be just plain ol' Jane!
    • i agree to this comment exactly. I dont think cosmetic surgery is right to the begin with. you should enjoy the body you were born with. the world would be boring if everyone was trying to look like the steriotypical models that we all envy on tv.
      • i agree we should enjoy the body we were given. things would be boring if we all looked the same. what would make one person look different from the rest?
    • I agree, this type of surgery will take away all the natural competiveness in athletic events as we know it
  • if there were to fellow up this research it would have to some control over who could get it. regluar people would not need it. only those with speical need should be allowed to do such thisthe handicap retard, us it to bring those that behide up to speed with other
  • I am a firm believer that God does everything for a reason. So if a child is born handicaped then they should live their life that way. Yes I believe things should be done to help the child and so forth but rearranging genes to avoid these problems is just playing God. I think we will be creating more problems then solving them if we begin doing all this engineering.
    • god also gave us the knowledge to better oursleves when we can. i am not saying this is total right but it could help a lot of unfourtune people. if it was u, u would still want that chance. things like this would have to be under very tight conrtol and watch
    • I agree that everything does happen for a reason I also believe that when you go as far as to messing with life it can take sudden turns when you are not expecting, doing such surgeries could be very dangerous and risky, it would only be worth it if it was to help someone who is in need.
      • i agree. i think the only altering surgery that should be offered is reconstructive surgery or breast implants offered to women who have lost a breast to cancer. this kind of surgery is out of the question to me.
    • I agree. As human beings we have no right to play God. This is why we are only humans and not God. I believe in God, and everything happens for a reason. There's a time for everything. I know as human beings we can not possibly understand why a child would be born handi-cap, but if the child is born handi-cap and another is not, there is a reason for this. It is not for us, as human beings, to correct this situation. There is nothing wrong with helping someone who is handi-cap, but to use technology t
      • don't get me wrong, I don't want to engineer super babies, but there are surgeries done already while babies are still in the womb to repair problems before they are born. If technology can genetically manipulate the gene causing cystic fibrosis which only has a life expectancy to about 22 years of age, wouldn't you want your parents to choose to give you a chance at a normal life? God gave us abilities and a brain. we need to use both to make the right choices about how to use technology.
    • I agree with your opinion. God give us proper things which depends on individuals. But i think that the handicaped should have a chance to live normal people. They have a lot of pain what normal people do not know. DNA engineering is conducted to the needed people.
  • This to me is neat, but i don't think the benfits will be helpful, the society will be split up even more if these ideas were allowed to be prevalent. Not everyone can recieve these surgeries, even though the chance might be there, various factors will aid in the reason for the reasons for participating in the surgeries. So if our society was split up between the surgecally gifted and the normal people, the world will become a harder place to find success for being just your average joe.
    • I agree. Our society will definitely split up between surgically gifted and normal people. Things will get so much more complicated. It will be harder to be just anormal happy person when competing in such a perfect world. Further more, We might end up less human and more robot-like. that's a scary thought!
  • I don't think we should go through with this idea. If everyone becomes extra smart or stronger, etc, then the world would become a much more complicated and unhappy one. It will be harder to compete for sucess and happiness. Besides, we might eventually lose all our human characteristics and become robots! that's a scary thought!
    • i think people would be robotic if they could alter themselves to be perfect. I dont agree with this idea at all
    • i must agree. the world would become much more complicated. it would be much harder to compete with natural talent. atlethes would not be the same.
  • I do not think this kind of technology should be pursued because if it was then our society would lose its individuality, freedom, creativity, and respect for one another. The unique think about the U.S.A. is that we all respect everyone's uniqueness and differences. With this new technology everyone would be the same. Everyone would be equally smart, equally pretty, equally strong. Nobody would need anyone. This is bad because we all make up a community. I am pretty sure everyone would become self-ce
  • i agree that this is a bad idea. basically, life would be really boring if everyone wanted the same bodies and minds. look at michael jackson, his money bought him a nose that is literally caving in on his face! we need to be a society that is more accepting of who we are....after all, it isn't our bodies or the way we look that makes us who we are. This kind of reconstruction of ourselves is like saying that we are not good enough the way we are. What do we have more respect for, the athlete who succee
  • I think that all human beings have a some equality and freedom. I know it is important to everyone. But God make us to be live naturally not by any artificial surgery. If surgery are prevailing to the all human, we might lose our dignity and right as a human. Many people will take all kinds of surgery for themselves. They do not have any difference as a human. I think surgery is not a good way to improve the quality of human beings.
  • i totally disagree with this type of surgery because if everyone has it done then we are all going to be like robots. we will all have the same characteristics and no one will be unusual. i think that we all should stay the way we are so that hard work and determination will pay off for those who put forth the effort.
  • I don't agree with this surgery. I don't agree with surgery that alters your physical appearance, unless that surgery is reconstructive. i also think that by making this surgery available to the public, it will eliminate all competition in life. we can all pay to be the best. and the it'll turn into the spectacle that breast implants have, with the women you see on talk shows who gets surgery after surgery so they'll be the biggest. soon you'll have people putting their children under the knife time aft
