Journal munger1102-18's Journal: Do we have a drinking problem? 23

Let's have a good old-fashioned debate, discussing how big a problem drinking is on UNCC's campus. Overall, is drinking a good thing or a bad thing? Make sure you provide some specific examples. Try to acknowledge the statements that have already been made--by either responding to them directly or by adding something new to the debate. You should make at least two comments to this journal entry by Friday, February 7.

Your comments should be at least a paragraph long.

Do we have a drinking problem?

  • i dont not think that drinking on campus is all together a bad thing. people that are 21 should be permitted to drink. but underage kids would cause complete chaos and college life would be hard for those of us who would like to study and have some quite every now and then.
    • I agree that drinking on campus is not that bad of a thing. I think anyone who is legal should be able to have a drink or two if they are responsible. I think the same for underage kids if they know what they are doing, the problem is that a lot of them don't and this becomes a problem.
    • I agree with you, but I don't think that underage drinkers are the only ones who cause chaos. Because from what I have seen, living on both sides of campus, and there are more upperclassman on the north side of campus, they are usually the ones who make the most noise, have parties, drink and do drugs on a regular basis. Therefore, I think it depends on the person individually, not the age, who may cause chaos.
      • I've noticed the same thing. students of age also are likely to get rowdy and cause problems when drinking. i've also found that those students are very easily employed to purchase alcohol for underaged kids. i'm not saying that students over 21 shouldn't be allowed to have a drink here and there if they want. they are of age, and by law they are permitted to consume alcohol. but i think that stricter consequences should be enforced on those found purchasing alcohol for minors.
  • I think there is nothing wrong with drinking on campus as long as it is responsible to where no one gets hurt, being that we are in college I think that we should be able to handle this issue responsibly, I at least know I can.
  • i have no major problem with under age drinking, but when students get out of control with it, it is a different problem. in stead of student getting drunk and staying in the same place they want to move around and get caught or act wild. get drunk pass out and go to sleep
    • Even though I don't now have a problem with underage drinking either, most underage drinkers drink TO get out of control. I haven't met to many college students that just want to drink a beer, they want to drink 6 or more so they will be out of control.
    • I agree with you, i think drunken is out of control. when some students get drunk, they can create many prolbems ; wild behavior, invasion privacy, and drinking drive as well as.
  • Living on campus, i don't believe that there is a huge drinking problem. People who are 21 should have the right to drink on campus. I have also noticed that most of the partying here takes place off campus. As long as people are not out of control, and drink responsably i feel it is okay to have a wet campus.
    • i disagree with you. there is a lot of underage drinking on campus. the drinking is done more often by males. when they drink they, they drink heavy and usual get out of control. they very upset when they get caught or in trouble. they see nothing wrong with their under age drink on campus. but u were correct in that most parties happen off campus. nothing goes on on this campus, after class or weekends
  • Drinking on campus is only bad thing in legal terms I believe. True, there is a large amount of underage students on campus drinking, but I feel that is because that they are away from home, its illegal for them to drink, but they still can do it, and they still can get away with it. That's why I feel there is so much underage drinking. Also, even though there is underage drinking doesn't always mean it's irresponsible drinking. Since a lot of drinking IS off campus, from my personal experience there is always a designated driver, or if not, sometimes it's not too incrediable far to walk. Others chose not to leave campus and enjoy the company of their roomates and hallmates. All in all drinking is taken responsably, in which there is no real danger at UNCC.
  • I only lived on campus for a little less than a semester before i moved to an apartment off campus. but i still have friends that live on campus, and i know for a fact that they drink on capmus on a very regular basis. i also know that they've been ticketed more than once for it, and no actual consequences have been enforced. if they've been ticketed, that means they were doing something to get caught, which means it was out of hand. in the short time that i was living in the dorms, there was a girl down the hall from me that had to be taken to the hospital on a weeknight because of alcohol poisoning. drinking on campus happens, and it happens often. however, personally, i will never drink on campus. not only do i think it's boring and lame to sit in your dorm and get trashed, you are much more at risk to get caught and lose your housing or get kicked out of school. don't get me wrong, we know how to party at this school, but ithink it makes much more sense to move the parties and the drinking off campus. most of the parties i go to are fairly close to campus; within walking distance even. most kids i know also make sure they have a designated driver if necessary.
  • I don't have a problem with people drinking on campus. Whether they are 21 or not. I do have a problem when people drink, and they get out of control with it. Such as, pucking in the hallways, or being really noisy at two in the morning,or breaking things in the building and then everyone having to pay for it. I am an RA in Cedar, which is substance free, and so far I haven't had any problems. I don't think we really have that big of a problem on our campus. I do know there are a lot of people who drink and do drugs, 21 and not 21, but for the most part they know how to keep it on the low. Therefore, I don't see a problem, as long as it stays undercontrol.
    • i agree with you. i think for the most part that students can stay under control, but if they do happen to start getting wild then we should punish them, but if they are just drinking a few beers and hanging out then i think that should be just fine.
    • I must agree with you. I don't have a problem with it either. That is unless it gets out of control and then it is usually above the students call and goes straight to the RA's and police officers and is handle. So far this year I have not had to deal with drunk, and loud neighbors which may be why i feel this way.
  • i think that drinking on campus comes along with the territory of being a college student. when we look back at our stay at college i can asure you that i won't be remembering my biology or stats class, but of that time when i got really wasted and had a good time. when we drink sometimes we do make mistakes, but this just helps us grow up.
    • But isn't the point in going to college to learn, and have fun. We are paying for our education now. That means that it isn't free. So we have to actually learn. Remember it and use it in life. Not just drink our worries away and our learnings with it, or driking to have fun and be social. Sure drinking can be fun but when you can't handle the things that you are bringing with the fun then why should you? It only helps us to griw up in the fact that we drink, like it or don't. Coming out of college knowing that I like beer is something that I know I am not going to do. I am coming out of college with an education and knowing that I can have fun without using substances
  • I don't think it is a problem, I have seen some instances at which people have been drunk and disruptive. I have been living in Oak suites so most of the students that live here that are over 21 can have alcohol. But I can't say that I have seen a problem with drinking on campus, it is handeled very well.
  • drinking is not tat bad at long we dotn over due it...almost everyone that turn 18 one time in their life time they have try to drink alcohol or taste it...ppl seem to think driking is bad becasue they only look at one person that out of control and judge on the rest.
  • It is not a matter to drink some people who is over 21, but it does not allow to drink underage on campus. Last semester I waw bad things which was some people got drunk late night and made a big trouble in our dorm. They made big noisy. I think over 21 can control their drinking but underage can not manage their alcohol...
  • i think that there is no problem at all with drinking on campus no matter what your age is. i know that for the most part we all probably started boozing it back in high school. college makes it safer in some ways because dorms do create a safe environment to drink in. drinking of course will get out of hand every once in awhile, but there always needs to be a little chaos or else life would be pretty boring. besides if you never got wild then how would you ever learn the valuable lessons of being a stupid drunk. i think that you should live it up now because when you get older you will have more responsability then you do now.
