Your topic for Essay 2 is to write a claim of fact supported by research on drinking in college. For Friday, you need to do some prewriting work on your own--brainstorming, clustering, freewriting--whatever works for you. The goal of this activity is to come up with a tentative claim for your essay. Once you've done that, post your claim in a comment to this journal entry. Then pick someone else's claim--one that nobody else has commented on--and respond to it, writing a paragraph-long explanation of whether it meets the requirements of a claim of fact.

allowing college students to drink on campus will in turn decrease DUI's is a claim of fact. First of all it answers the question of does it exist? Do college students get DUI's, yes, I believe that is true. Will allowing them to drink on campus reduce DUI's, that's debateable. Both criteria for a claim of fact has been met. I personally believe that allowing drinking on campus only leads to many more problems than just DUI's How would you police that?

This is a claim of fact. It meets all the criteria of a claim of fact. Binge Drinking does exist and prevention programs are not reduce it. Also, this statement is debateable. Some may argue that prevention programs do reduce that amount of binge drinking. Also, this claim sticks strictly to the claim of fact, and does not go into the gray area such as claim of value or claim of policy. This claim is valid, and will create a sound paper.

I think this is a very good claim. I happen to agree about the provention programs but im sure others will debate it. Interesting claim!

The claim, "The social aspect of drinking causes many students to miss class" is a claim of fact. It answers the question of "what are it's effects?" The effects of drinking are that students miss class. The claim is also debatable. Someone could argue that only some students miss class because of drinking, or that students miss class fro reasons other than drinking.

This is a good claim of fact that answers the questions what causes it and what are the effects. According to this claim drinking on campus happens because it is fun and creates good memories and the effect is that the student is less-stressed. This is a debatable claim because some students may not agree with it. However, this claim could be interrpreted as an opinion so there would have to be some kind of evidence to stear clear of making this a personal opinion essay.

i do not think you have to drink to have a memorable time in college, and it couod lead to more stress if you get busted.

University officials should turn their head on the subject of college student drinking. If students are able to drink on campus it will decrease the ammount of DUI's, injuries, and even deaths of college students.

At the age of 18 we are of legal age. We are liable for our actions. If we can be taken to war at 18 why not be able to have a drink.
