Journal munger1102-18's Journal: Should teenagers have cell phones? 28

More and more teenagers have cell phones today. Yes, it's 2003, and neary everyone has one, but is it appropriate for teens to have them, too? After all, it's difficult enough for high school teachers to keep their students' attention. With the added distraction of cell phones in the classroom, can anything be learned?

The News Journal of Ohio published an editorial on the topic just this past week. Read the article, then comment on whether you agree on this proposal for controlling teen cell phone use in school. Post at least two comments, and make sure you reply to at least one of your classmates' comments. The goal is to have an online conversation, where you read and respond to others' opinions. Be as specific as possible, using examples from your own experience to support your points.

Should teenagers have cell phones?

  • Students should be allowed to use cellphones during breaks and in between classes, they'll sneak to do it anyway. They just be turned off or on silent during class.
  • Cell phones should be allowed in school as long as they don't cause a disruption in class. The average student wouldn't have it on in class because they wouldn't want to get in trouble with their teachers.
    • The only problem I have with your statement is that you are talking about the "average" student being responsible. I believe that the article was clearly about the abuse of the cell phones by teens being the cause of the problem to begin with.So how do you plan to deal with those who don't act responsibly?
      • The article seemed to be talking about high school students, and how it was dealt w/ at my high school was if u had it was asked to turned off once then ur parents had to come pick it up. Most parents work and find it an inconvience to have to come pick it up so if they did once u could bet it didn't happen too many more times
    • If students were allowed to have them in class they would leave them on more often because they wouldn't be affraid of getting in trouble.
    • I agree! At the beginning of each semester, the professor usually warns students to turn off their cell phones before class begins. I'm sure all students would try to remember to turn their cell phones off to avoid the humiliation of their phones going off during lecture.
    • I agree that as long as it does not interrupt the class that cell phones should be aloud.
  • I think teens should be able to have their cell phones. I know during weather disasters and moments like 9-11, we were all relieved to have our cell phones to call our parents. But i think they should be kept silent or off during class, or left in cars until the end of the school day. If they have to be in building, they should be kept out of plain sight . That's how things get stolen. If there is an emergency where a student needs to get in touch with a parent or vice versa during the day, they have perfectly good phones in the office for emergencies.
    • I think it is very necessary for college AND high school students to have cell phones, if used appropriately and wisely. It's true it could be very disruptive during class, but it is also very important in case of emergency or disasters. For instance, it snowed today and accidents are likely to happen. It's better for students to have cell phones to call for help should something bad happens. Or to assure the parents that they are ok because i'm sure all parents are worried about their kids driving on a snowy day.
  • I agree with the article that cell phone use needs to be regulated in school.Notice that I said school, not college.I believe that based on my classes, I have never seen anyone's cell phone disrupt a class at this college. However, high school and lower grades have a central office with phones available within their building to deal with students needs & emergencies. Also, the students are not as disciplined at using their new toy as older students do.. Much like driving a car,the novelty wears off!
    • I agree with above comments because in class time i have heard cell phone ringing. That distrubed to concentrate to the class and even teacher and classmates.
    • I beg to differ, I have seen cell phones disrupt pretty much all of my classes. Most kids have such a need for them I have even heard them answer the call, even if they had the ringer on vibrate, most feel the need to be connected. So it isn't that the college atmosphere is well controled it is that certain people don't fell like they have to be connected or it is that they might have forgotten to turn of there cell phone. Most of the time it is due to the want to be connected.
  • I think cell phones should not be allowed in classes. Especially in high school. They can leave it in their car and then use it after school. When someone forgets to turn theirs off they do disrupt class. If we were allowed to have them more people would leave them on and they would be even more of a distraction.
  • Yes i do believe teen should have cell phone. You never know what emergency could come up, expecially while driving. But i also feel they should be respectful enough to turn them off during class.
  • Teens should be able to have cell phones today. The benifits of these devises far out weigh the problems that they could create. They can provide assistance to a teen when they are in need of help. Although teenagers should have the common courtasy to set the phone to vibrate or silent during class periods.
    • no disputes the necessity of the teen driver having a cell phone. The problem appears to be that there is a lack of courtesy as you put it and how do you expect the teachers to continue to deal with this situation. Rmember this is high school we are talking about.
  • Cell phones should be allowed in school. Teens can touch with their parents and friends easily. But in class time teens should turn off their cell phones. I think cell phone in shool is allowed but in class time cell phone does not allowed to carry in classroom.
  • cell phones should NOT be allowed to disrupt class. if they do , then they should be confinscated. If students are given the priveledge to have cells in school, they need to be respectful and cut them off during class.
  • I think it is okay for teens in high school to have cell phones as long as they leave them in their car or locker. there is no use for them while you are in class.
  • Every one have the right to bring cell phone to class at long they want too. They pay for the phone is their right to use it in anywhere but at long we dont disrupt other when we use it.
  • I think that cell phones should be allowed in high school. At certain times we can't plan on what is going to happen so they are good to have in case of emergencies. But while in class they should be turned off in respect to the other students.
