Journal munger1101-8's Journal: Best War Coverage? 33

Check out the Gulf War coverage over at The Onion, "America's Finest News Source." Is this not the best coverage of the war yet seen?

P.S. Just in case you don't figure it out right away, the entire Web site is a joke. What do you think? Is the war on Iraq a joking matter? Is this site funny? Is it appropriate to make jokes in times of war? Please make two comments to the class journal by the end of this week.

Best War Coverage?

  • I believe that this somewhat disrespectful to our country's leader and to the soliders fighting for our country. Maybe I'm overeacting, but war is a serious matter. A couple minor jokes might lighten the mood occassionally, but this site has definitely taken it too far. I may be bias because many in my family have served in the military, but for those unfamilair with war as most in our generation are, we may never take it seriously or respect military personel as we should.
    • I totally agree with you and I don't think you are being biased. I think that Americans should support the troops even if they don't exactly support the idea that we are going to war. I also have a lot of relatives in my family that have been in previous wars so I agree with you that war is not a laughing matter and Americans should take it more seriously.
    • I don't see the aspect of disresect towards the president because I haven't seen him do anything a real(good) president would do. It seems as if he is just a military leader just like his father was and only putting lives at stake. The jokes about the soldiers I see a over the line. But when it comes to the president(Bush) or the government, let the jokes keep coming.
    • I totally agree with what you are saying. I think that this site did take it too far. Little jokes would be appropriate but this is a serious matter. I don't think that people respect military personel like we should. Like I said before, they are fighting for us. What do people want to do, sit around until someone does something bad enough to our country?? I think that some people are oblivious to a lot of things.
  • A few months ago I found out about the Onion site from a friend. Never have I taken the site seriously nor do I take it seriously now, much like I do not take our President seriously. The Onion is a parody site much like the long running Saturday Night Live, which the last time I checked has been going strong for over thirty years with little to no controversy. Of course I support the troops overseas right now, and I pray every night for their safe return. Some would say that I am being unpatriotic beca
  • I think that this website is degrading to the American troops who are going out their and risking their lives for our safety. Yes, people may disagree with Bush's decision to go to war, but as Americans we need to support those who fight for our freedom, not ridicule them. In general this website would seem funny, but I just don't like the fact that they are making jokes about war. To me war is no laughing matter. Americans are dying, and many innocent people are being killed. It's just hard for me to get a
    • I see your point exactly! Innocent people and troops are dying, what's so funny?
    • You are right! People are out there risking their lives and people are here making fun of their efforts and sacrifice. People may disagree and no support the war, but they can respect the soldiers. I find no humor in making fun of the war.
    • I think this person might be taking the article a little bit too seriously. The author does not mean to ridicule or offend anybody, they are just making jokes to get a laugh or two out of Americans and take away some stress. It's obvious that this entire site is a joke, and it's intended audience is light-hearted and looking for a laugh.
    • I don't see one thing making fun of the soldiers on that site. All it is doing is making fun of bush and his minions.
    • people that disagree with bush should not make jokes on the war, instead they can pray for the melitary to come back safly, or for the war to end. but making jokes will hurt a lot of people's feelings specially those who know someone that went to the war.
  • I believe this website is disrespectful and insensitive to the American people. I think that war is a serious issue and jokes are uncalled for because lives are at stake and making fun of the situation shows that these people have no cares about the feelings of others. People have family and loved ones in this war and could loose them at any minute, it is nothing to joke or kid about!!!
    • Don't watch the Daily Show. Saying that war is something above jokes is very wrong. Taboo subjects have always been the targets of comedians. War is nothing different. Black comedians make raciest jokes all the time; do you think they care about racism?
    • I agree with you. I think that this website has gone to far. Yes it's okay to joke around a little bit, but not when it comes down to joking about men and women in uniform, and our President. Others may disagree with what Bush has done by going to war with Iraq, but he is still our President, and we should respect him because of that.
    • I agree with jlbarrow, this site is disrespectful and insensitive to the american AND iraqen people as well. a lot of people went to this war to protect us, that means that we should pray for them instead of making jokes. people have family and loved ones in this war, including myself, and this is no joke!
  • I believe that it is okay to have jokes pertaining to the war and the situation that America is in right now. Sometimes it helps to lighten the whole situation. However, war is very serious, especially for the ones fighting in it, and there is most definitely a place to draw the line. This site is pretty disrespectful and they did go a little bit too far with it!
    • I agree with you. I think that it's okay to joke about the war a little bit, but this website has crossed the line. There are certain times when it's okay to joke around about important things like war, but this isn't one of them. (Meaning after the war, and all of our service men and women have returned home safely.) I just think that this website went a little too far.
  • I think it's fine to joke about the war. It puts people at ease a little bit and takes away the worry and stress for a minute or two.
    • I agree with this statement to a certain degree. You have to think about the families of those soldiers. How would you feel if you had a loved one in the war and you saw this website?
  • I do not beleive that this is a joking matter. I also agree with other comments stating that people have family members over their fighting for us. Even though I do not support Bush and believe that he is the worst president we've had ( in my lifetime), I don't believe that people should be making jokes about our soldiers putting their life on the line. This website may put some people's minds at ease by adding humor but I think that it is inappropriate.
  • I have read The Onion many times in the past, and I have found some of their articles amusing. When I read the article that they wrote about the war, it disturbed me to think that they would actually make light of the situation. The soldiers that are fighting for our country right now are risking their lives and they probably wouldn't find it amusing that writers are making fun of the situation. I understand that in this country we have the freedom of speech which gives those people every right to write so
    • I agree with what you have said. It is very disturbing to think that people are not taking this situation seriously. There are certain things that are very amusing to joke about, but war is not one of them.
  • Well I thought the site was pretty funny. I'm not really laughing at the situation we are in, but I do find it amusing what some people think of Bush. I'm against the war, and I see no real reason for starting it. I wish Bush was willing to put soldiers at risk, only if he would do the same. I don't feel like we are at war since I don't see any bombs around the house, so I can't help but laugh at the situation. But I am glad I'm not in Iraq.
    • So.. you're not against the site because it is a satire, and because it's protected under freedom of speech, but because you're anti-war and the onion supports your case? Would you be against the site if it was a satire with articles that leaned to the right?
  • I don't find this website at all humorous. War is a very serious matter and I don't think it should be taken lightly. There is an appropriate time and place for jokes, but jokes about war is definately inappropriate, especially now.
  • I didn't find this site very humorous. I think that our soldiers need all the support that they can get and they don't need jokes being made about them. I know that some don't agree with going to war but they need to know that these soldiers are over there fighting for all of us. At the same time, I do think that we all need something to laugh about and take our attention away from the war. I just think that there is a better way to make people laugh at this time.
    • I totally agree with you. It really isn't a laughing matter so it shouldn't be taken lightly. There are family members all over the U.S. fighting for this cause and even though i'm not sure i agree with the war it's still our country and we should be supportive and not making it a laughing matter. Some people just don't have respect anymore for what is really right.
  • I think this web site is really uncalled for. America is at war and people should not put disrespectful toward our country, our leader, or our military. This shows how america has changed over time with how much we really respect others. This website is not humorous at all. I don't think some would even understand that it is suppose to be becasue it really isn't a laughing matter. People these days are a little to open with their opinion.
  • The name of the site fits the content rather well. The onion is not a pleasent vegetable, like the onion the website is not meant to intertain the people, but through comical gestures they try convey their point of view on this situation. I do not believe it is right at the set time and date to do things like that, but about 100 million americans will just protest and say it's their freedom of speech, so let them have their freedom if it will make them happier.
  • The onion is specifically made to be a satire of just about EVERYTHING going on in the news.. so the war is no exception. A lot of their articles arent really too funny, but sometimes, they can be. They should be allowed to make satirical articles on todays news because theyve been doing it for years now.. and they dont really say anything all that bad. Let's not forget guys - it's a satire; it's not meant to be taken at the literal level.
