Journal munger1101-8's Journal: Do we have a drinking problem? 43

Let's have a good old-fashioned debate, discussing how big a problem drinking is on UNCC's campus. Overall, is drinking a good thing or a bad thing? Make sure you provide some specific examples. Try to acknowledge the statements that have already been made--by either responding to them directly or by adding something new to the debate. You should make at least two comments to this journal entry by Friday, February 7.

Your comments should be at least a paragraph long.

Do we have a drinking problem?

  • i think that drinking is bad if it is done to the point of inotxication and just to get drunk. I do not think it is bad when it is casual drinks with people over 21. Personally, I do not drink, for many of you that might surprise you or make you think "yeah right, " but i don't because I have watched alcoholism affect my family and i just want no part in it and i also don't drink for religious purposes. I think that people under 21 who drink and those who drink irresponsibly have created a bad sterotype for drinking. Things such as date rape and drunk driving have made alcohol and drinking it a bad thing, when in some cases one glass of wine can act as a medication for heart disease. Our society has just made bad decisions when it comes to drinking.
    • I totally agree with what you have said. I personally don't drink either and for some of the same reasons. Drinking can become a very big problem when done irresponsibly, but like you have said,a casual drink with people over 21 I think is ok. But for the most part, I think drinking just leads to bigger problems.
  • Drinking can become very dangerous if it is taken too far. Many students start drinking more at college because they have more freedom. They don't have parents that will see them when they come home and they don't necessarily have to drive anywhere because a lot of people live around campus. I'm sure that everybody knows that UNCC does have frats and sororities. I know of one incident at one of the frats where someone had to be taken away in an ambulance because they had alcohol poisoning. Drinking can be something done socially and in a harmless way or it can become dangerous.
    • Going to a far college been one of the important things that most of the highschool graduate students want to do. they want to have some freedom away from their parents that make the rules at home. And to have freedom, they need to break some rules just to show the others that they are old enough. not considering the dangerous affects of drinking.
    • I agree with what she's saying. I think it's ok to drink, just as long as you do it responsibly. Once kids are out of high school, they can do whatever they want to. In college students will be forced to be responsible, and they should drink like a responsible adult as well. There's nothing wrong with drinking as long as you keep it under control and don't have bad intentions in doing so.
      • As long as the people drinking in college are of legal age, and arent drinking a whole cache of alcohol, then I dont have a problem. However, I think that people who are underage should not be drinking. If you're going to be drinking poison, you might as well be of legal age.
        • I see little difference between an 18 year old and a 21 year old. Just because the substance is illegal, does not make it any more dangerous to an 18 year old.
  • Drinking for the wrong reasons can become dangerous and addictive. For college students alcohol usually factors in to have a good time and sometimes things get out of hand. I don't think that everyone on campus drinks, but for those that do and drink responsibly isn't a problem. I don't think that it has become such a large problem that we need to monitor every party all the time. Underage drinking is not legal obviously, one or two drinks shouldn't be such a problem. If the goal of the drinking is to get totally plastered then something should be done to watch out for that person. People over twenty one can drink freely, even those people are the ones that are involved in drunk-driving accidents. It isn't always the underage drinkers that are to blame,
    • I agree with you on this point. Drinking can be dangerous when it is not done resposibly. But my question is how does someone know when to stop? Maybe they have never taken a drink before coming to college and then they come here and get drunk and harm themselves or others. How can we stop this before it happens?
      • With everyone having a different tolerance level for alcohol, it is hard to know when a person has had "enough". There probably isn't a right way to stop sloppy and harmful drunks before they get out of control. If someone hasn't ever drank before I would caution them to do it with people they feel comfortable around and a place where they know they are going to stay and not have to drive. Every different situation has different answers and I don't feel that there is a way to describe everyone's drinking habits. People should stop when they "feel" they've had enough, granted when they are drinking it is difficult to make that call.
    • I totally agree with you on this topic. You pointed out something very interesting... it is not always underage drinkers that are to blame. I also believe that every party does not need to be monitiored constantly, and minimal resposible drinking is acceptable.I think that college students let drinking get out of hand, and that can be ridiculous and gives all college students a bad rap.
    • In general, Drinking is wrong. yet there is some good parts of drinking. for example, drinking one glass one is good for the heart; also one glass of beer is good for the liver. but it is totaly wrong to drink more than that. some people think that it is cool to drink. some others think that by drinking they will get over their problems. the truth is that they forget their troubles for one day, but this one day might affect their life or someone else's life.
  • I do believe that drinking on campus is a big problem when people do not know how to control it. I know for a fact that there is drinking on campus and for a teen set free from their parents, this is something new that they want to try. There is no one here to tell them it is wrong so they are going to do what they want to do. Although teens should not be drinking in the first place, it is better for them to do it on campus then to drive somewhere and get in a wreck. Although drinking is a big problem, no one can watch over every student all the time and make sure that it is not happening.
    • I agree with your comments. Many times college is a person's first major experience with freedom and alcohol and it gives them the ability to experiment with new things. I am glad that many parties are around campus so that people are not driving which can cause bigger problems than just a drunk college kid.
  • I think that drinking on UNCC's campus is not a big problem at all in comparison to other colleges. It is very rare that I overhear students talking about a wild party that went down last Thursday night or discussing going uptown and having a few drinks some weekend. I'm sure there are a few selected cases where drinking gets out of hand at frat/sorority parties, but otherwise alcohol doesn't seem to be a big problem. For instance, I'm very familiar with Carolina's campus and students... UNC is not stereotyped as a party school, yet you can count on some sort of alcholic gathering every night (especially Thursdays). They are often forced to put checkpoints around Chapel Hill, and parties are always crashed by the cops. You simply don't hear of many poisioning cases or drunk driving around Charlotte; UNCC has it better than they think.
    • I totally agree with you. I dont feel that it is a problem here either. Although some people may do, you rarely ever hear about. Which in some cases can be a good thing and in other cases it can be a bad thing.
    • I would have to agree with you. I don't really hear about such things about drinking and partying. I thought there would be alot more of this before i came here but now that i'm here it doesn't seem to be the Big Issue. I could just be i don't go to party's so i don't really know what's goin on where. I guess it all depends on who you hang out with and the environment you're in.
    • I totally agree with what you are saying. I've been to many other colleges and there aren't near as many parties at UNCC than there are at other schools. At some other schools there are parties and drinking going on every single night of the week. At UNCC you might hear of a party over the weekend but nothing really big. I always see cops out when there are parties at UNCC so they do try to control the amount of drinking going on.
  • My personal belief is that drinking is only a bad thing when it is done by immature or irresponsible people and not done in moderation. The reason I state my feelings about this issue in this way is because I have seen people take alcohol to the extreme. Quite frankly, alcoholism runs in my family. Overall, drinking is not bad. When drinking becomes habitual, and if it begins to cause you to hurt those you love or even yourself, then that is when it is bad. Drinking socially and in moderation and hanging around other responsible people would solve many peoples problems with alcohol.
    • I agree with everything you said about drinking being bad only when it's done in an immature manner. Some people just don't know when to stop drinking and that's when they make stupid choices or just make complete fools of themselves. Drinking is ok, as long as you're not hurting yourself or anyone around you.
    • I really agree with you here. Drinking does not have to be a problem. Like you said drinking can only become a problem when you drink irresponsibly. Like I said earlier I have all but 3 drinks a month if that so for me it would be hard to see myself being an alcoholic. I love this whole statement "Drinking socially and in moderation and hanging around other responsible people would solve many peoples problems with alcohol" because it is SO true!
  • Personally I don't find drinking to be a problem on campus. Rarely do I find any of the janitorial staff on campus to be intoxicated to any degree, and I have only had one of my professors teach a class under the influence of alcohol. Now is drinking is a good thing or not, I don't know. I guess it's ok just as long as the person can still get his or her job done.
  • Yes, there is a lot of drinking that goes on at UNCC frat parties. I have been to a few parties, but haven't drank while I was there socializing. I really am not a big fan of drinking. I don't see the point in it, but I don't have a problem with other people drinking if they are responsible enough to know when to stop. Excessive drinking is where people get themselves into trouble, which I think is wrong. People should know their limits, and be responsible enough to stop before they are out of control. It will save themselves a lot money and embarrassment. Not to mention people who drink responsibly will not risk getting alcohol poisoning or making inappropriate decisions.
  • Yeah i believe that when teens come to a college like UNCC there will be teens who don't really know how to respsonsibly deal with freedom. I don't drink so i'm not really sure what goes on at party's and such. My roomate is in a Sorority and there are a lot of opportunities to drink. Atleast most of the time they are responsible seeing as how they have designated drivers from one place to the next. I also believe that if it were legal to drink then kids may not do so (or atleast drink to get drunk). My brother use to drink when it was illegal but now that it is legal for him he doesn't really drink that much anymore.
  • I do not find drinking a problem. When it becomes a problem is when you are underage or you are of age but you drink to the point of intoxication. I dont think drinking is a problem on the campus of UNCC, but then again i dont attend many parties on campus so therefore I dont feel that I have the right to say yes or no it is a problem on or campus.
    • I agree with you . I live at home, and don't get a chance to go to any parties, or other places on campus where there might be drinking, so I really can't say whether there is a drinking problem on campus.
    • Drinking in itselft is not a problem if it is handled in the correct doses. I do not attend many parties on campus either but I do know that when I do drinking at these parties is quite excessive. My thing is people should learn to make their own mistakes as long as it does not affect other people i.e. drunk driving. If a person does not endanger anyone else I don't there is a problem with them doing it since it is that person's right.
  • I really can't say whether or not UNCC has a drinking problem, because I live at home and don't come in contact with what really goes on, on campus. I think that drinking is okay, as long as you are of age, and you drink responsible. I think that it's stupid to drink, just to get drunk. People just need to think before they make the decision to drink, especially if there are other people involved.
  • Honestly. On occasion, how many of us like to get drunk. I know I do, I don't make it a habit either, that's the thing most binge drinking students at UNCC don't understand. When the drinking becomes as frequent as going to class is where the problem lies. Most "party animals" get drunk every weekend - and sometimes during the week- and this drinking not only leads to problems the morning after, but those problems could linger and eventually turn the drinking into alcoholism, and that is a fact. Getting drunk every once in a while isn't bad but every weekend is.
    • I cannot tell if you believe that UNCC has a drinking problem or not. To comment on your statemnt, I understand the point you are trying to make, but I believe that it is the drinking once in a while that makes people start to binge drink. Alcohol is addictive, you do not have to binge right away or even all the time, the small drink or the occasional party can draw you into alcoholism. So be careful, a person that is just a little bit drunk is still drunk, and can cause as much harm as the wasted person.
  • Living off campus does not expose me to the things that the students living on campus are exposed to. Even though, I believe that UNCC is better off then many other schools in North Carolina or any other state, on the issue of alcohol related problems on campus. When I was in high school, my senior year when everyone was applying to colleges, people would talk about each college, and there were people that would state their opinions about the school they were going, for example: people going to Appalachian would say "I'm going to the party school, woohoo!" or similar comments about Western Carolina. These schools get classified as party schools because of their history with alcohol and other drugs. Applying to UNCC I did not hear a single story or rumor about UNCC being a party school, or having a bad reputation because of alcohol or other drugs. When I am on campus, over at a friends dorm or for other reasons, during the night times, walking through the student housing around 12 - 3 am. you don't hear or see major parties or crazy things going on. For these reasons I believe UNCC does not have a drinking problem, if anyone dares to disagree, compare our schools history of alcohol related problems to almost any other college in the country.
    • UNCC might not have any problems on campus, but that does not mean there is nothing going on off campus.
      • I live in the dorms and last semester there were parties everywhere, all night long. I wouldn't really call them wild parties, although every so often I would hear a drunk racing down the hall trying to catch another drunk. This semester the parties have tapered off. Due to the fact that, the people who partied everynight last semester have flunked out.
    • I also do not believe UNCC has a drinking problem, though being a 2nd semester freshman I'm still new to the college. And since I commute to school every day that means I only see what goes on during the daylight hours so I really have nothing to base my belief on. I could be wrong, UNCC could be the drunk capital of NC or it could be a very sober campus. During 12th grade year I heard how this person was going to some notorious party school. I never heard anything about UNCC being a party school though; Chapel Hill maybe but I never heard anything like that about the Charlotte school.
  • Drinking at UNCC I think is a problem but not a huge problem. Living in the dorms, you do see and most definitly hear the effects of students drinking, but I haven't seen it to the point where anyone has hurt themselves or anyone else. I personally don't drink, and that is just the way I chose to live my life, but I really don't have a problem with anyone else drinking as long as they know how to do it responsibly. They should know there limits and be prepared to take the consequences if they choose to drink. But personally I don't think it is such a great idea. Drinking can become a really big problem when students don't know when enough is enough.
  • Since I really do not talk to a lot of people I do not know if a lot of people drink here. I think that my group of friends do not have a drinking problem. We have but all 3 drinks a month so I don't think that WE have a drinking problem. Altogether drinking is not good thing and is something that can be harmful but I do not always do what is right so...... But I know that in can be harmful.
  • Personally I believe that drinking is okay to a certain extent. When it is done in a casual and mature manner I dont see much of a problem with it. However, I have been in many situations and places where it is totally out of control. When you speak to someone the day after that doesnt remember anything from that night, it is too much. I really havent seen it to be a huge problem at UNCC, but of course every college will encounter the bad epesodes of alcohol.
  • I believe drinking is acceptable if done responsibly by those over the required age limit. One reason being those over the age limit have already grown enough brain cells that they can kill off some and not be phased. Another reason would be that the earlier you start drinking the harder it can be to stop and the more damage it can cause. Overindulging in alcohol is like smoking, they show you the nice looking people with a cigarette puffin away at a young age but what they don't show you is that person fast forward 20 years wheezing and coughing every 2 minutes. But if taken moderately and responsibly alcohol would have very little damage to your system if any.
  • I think that there is a problem with the drinking here at UNCC, it seems like it everywhere I look. I do not drink, I don't ever want to drink. I think that they should have stricter rules on their drinking policies, because it is unlawful for minors to be drinking.
