Journal munger1101-8's Journal: Claim for Essay 2 45

Your topic for Essay 2 is to write a claim of fact supported by research on drinking in college. For Friday, you need to do some prewriting work on your own--brainstorming, clustering, freewriting--whatever works for you. The goal of this activity is to come up with a tentative claim for your essay. Once you've done that, post your claim in a comment to this journal entry. Then pick someone else's claim--one that nobody else has commented on--and respond to it, writing a paragraph-long explanation of whether it meets the requirements of a claim of fact.

  • Drunk driving kills the inocent.
    • I can't decided whether it is a claim of fact. In my opinion this is not a debateable issue. It could be on the basis of regularity in occurance, but that is about it. Drunk driving kills the innocent and not innocent alike. You have me questioning whether it is or isn't, but i honestly don't think that this claim is debateable.
    • This does not sound too debateable, most people would agree that drunk diving kills people.
  • Heredity is related to alcoholism in college student drinking.
    • I think your claim is prime example of a claim of fact. It has all the needed qualifications of a factual claim. It can answer the questions of whether or not it happens, whether or not your statement is true, whether it truly exists, and what its effects are. I think it should be an interesting subject to research on and read about b/c it will create a great argument. Some people will chose to believe that alcoholism is genetic and others will not believe it. Way to go on picking a good subtopic for drinking.
  • People with depression tend to turn to drinking to help cope with their problems.
    • I like your claim. It seems to answer all the questions of a claim of fact but it needs a more specific point to it. Maybe instead of saying that "People with depression...." say: uneducated [about effects of depression] people tend to turn to drinking to help cope with their problems. Just thought this would raise a better argument.
  • Drinking in college increases one's chances of getting sexually harrassed or raped.
    • I do believe this is a claim of fact, but I do not think that it is very debateable. I do not think that people are going to argue that when you are drunk you don't have the decision making skills that you need to help you prevent a rape or being harassed.
      • I think you can still argue that it is a claim of fact. Just because it impairs your judgment doesn't mean that it causes more people to be raped. You would just be proving with statistics that a correlation between binge drinking, and sexual misconduct exists.
  • Binge drinking can cause college students to fall behind in their studies.
    • I believe this is a good claim of fact. It is a debatable topic. It can answer the question if this statement is true or not. It show that drinking affects studies directly, by their grades. I think it would interesting to find out if this is one of the reasons so many college student drop or are kicked out. My opinion would be that it does cause students grades to fall. I wonder what support would be used againt this. I think this is a good claim and a lot of evidence can be found on this topic.
    • Also, hi/she destroy his/her life and the lives of the people that live with him/her.
  • The legal agelimit to drink has cuased an high amount of problems with alcoholism.
    • I do think this is a claim of fact. First of all, it's a good claim because many people would disagree with it. The purpose of having the legal drinking age at 21 is to keep younger people from drinking and reduce problems with alcohol. Also, it answers the appropriate questions to make it a claim of fact. When asking "is it true?" "does it exist?" "what caused it?" and "what are its effects?" one could easily draw up a number of answers and back them up with research.
  • Changes is society resulted in the higher drinking age.
    • This is indeed a claim of fact. The reason why is beacuse you can answer the following questions. Is it true? What caused it? What are the effects. I strongly agree with your claim of fact.

Kids just coming out of high school are more likely to drink irresponsibly than others.
    • I believe this to be a claim of fact. I think that this will be an interesting argument. I'm sure that you will find plenty of information on this topic. Some kids coming out of high school tend to go a little crazy, when they are no longer under the direct care of their parents.
  • Peer pressure and the need of acceptance leads college students to binge drinking.
    • I believe that this does happen (exists), it is true, and you stated the cause. This was the defintion of claim of fact, therefore you have met the criteria. My only question is that I wonder if it is debatable. Wo would argue wih yor claim?
  • Underage drinkers often use alcohol as a way of showing rebellion.
    • This is a claim of fact because it can be answered by the requirement, "Does it happen?" I believe the writer will have a harder time proving this than another topic, but good luck with your work.
  • The persistent binge drinking throughout college of some students can lead to alcoholism in later years.
    • I think this is a claim of fact. I think you could apply the question "What caused it?" Alcoholism in some cases is caused by persistent binge drinking throughout college.
  • Drinking my female college students is a major cause of date rape.
    • I'm kind of confused as to whether this is a claim of fct since the cause is included in the claim. It does, however, state a fact but the question as to "what caused it" is included.
  • People who drink have a higer risk of dying than people who don't drink.
  • Most people who have a drinking problem think that they are not alcoholics!
  • Due to peer pressure and the only way to fit in, Binge Drinking is highly associted.
    • You might want to reword that a bit. It is definitely debateable but you may have a bit of trouble finding good sources. Other than that it sounds good~
  • Habitual drinking in college can lead to lower grades.
    • The claim, "Habitual drinking in college can lead to lower grades," does follow the reqirements for a claim of fact. It can definitely be argued on because there are some students that binge drink and maintain straight A's, but is also a fact because this does happen often. It is true and it exists at almost every college over the nation.
  • College students who consume large amounts of alcohol tend to let their grades drop quicker than those who don't drink at all.
    • This is a claim of fact because it answers the questions that the claim of fact has to answer and it can easily be argued. Someone can argue that their grades do drop quicker and some can argue that they don't. This will be a good topic and it will be easy to show support.
  • Binge Drinking is increasing around college campuses in the U.S.
  • People who binge drink are more likely to do drugs.
  • Binge drinking is more popular when it is an illegal activity.
  • Excessive drinking causes damage to the body.
    • This definately is a claim of fact but not too many people would disagree with you. Just like the sugar in rats experiment sure it gives them cancer but I bet you give someone 40lbs of anything over a short period of time it will cause damage, same with alcohol.
  • Alcohol related cases in Hospitals are on the rise.
