That is indeed the case. The white side is randomized (with a few rules like bishops on opposite color squares) and then the black side gets the exact same setup.
I've never been canoeing before, but I imagine there must be just a few simple heuristics you have to remember... Yes, don't fall out, and don't hit rocks.
