Submission + - Voyager 1, so close to interstellar space that we can taste it!

mphall21 writes: Voyager 1 is nearing the edge of the magnetic highway of our solar system and scientists believe this is the final area the space probe must cross before entering interstellar space.

The Voyager team infers this region is still inside of our heliosphere because the direction of the magnetic field has not changed. The direction of this field is expected to change when Voyager goes into interstellar space.

'Although Voyager 1 still is inside the sun's environment, we now can taste what it's like on the outside because the particles are zipping in and out on this magnetic highway,' said Edward Stone, Voyager project scientist based at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. 'We believe this is the last leg of our journey to interstellar space. Our best guess is it's likely just a few months to a couple years away. The new region isn't what we expected, but we've come to expect the unexpected from Voyager.'

Moving at 10.5 miles per second, the space probe is the most distant man-made object from Earth.

The space craft has been in operation for 35 years and receives regular commands and transmits data back to the Deep Space Network.

Submission + - Self-Replication Process Holds Promise for Product (sciencedaily.com)

mphall21 writes: New York University scientists have developed artificial structures that can self-replicate, a process that has the potential to yield new types of materials. In the natural world, self-replication is ubiquitous in all living entities, but artificial self-replication has been elusive. The new discovery is the first steps toward a general process for self-replication of a wide variety of arbitrarily designed seeds.

Maybe its because I am in the army, or maybe because my unit has not received the word, but we have never been told that we could not view wikileaks. In fact in my shop, we are encouraged to read it.

I would like to stand up for some of my fellow military members. Just because we are in the military, that does not mean we don't know what's going on the world. When we are home, we live regular lives just like everyone else, we have access to the same information. To stop this information from reaching us, you would have to disconnect our internet, take away our cellphones, take away our on base post office and force us and our families to stay on post.

If there is a conspiracy to keep information from getting out to the public, most of us are not aware of it. That of course does not mean that there are no higher ups trying to accomplish that.

I believe that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are more complex than "we are there just for oil" or "we are fighting terrorism". Just like everything else in life, there is no black and white, just different shades of grey.

The world is heading for a worldwide economy, that means that we have to start working harder and more efficiently to compete with foreign companies. People need to realize that this is where we are going, for better or for worse.
