Why use the big corporate models? If you have a computer with a recent-ish GPU, look at GPT4All and LM-Studio. What the author is asking for already exists.

And if you want to run these models on 3rd party hardware, use t3.chat - very reasonable monthly cost, and their business model doesn't include harvesting your data.

Anyone using chatgpt.com or MS Copilot is kinda running behind the times at this point.

Comment 4080Super Last Year was my best decision. (Score 1) 45

I'm so glad I bought a 4080Super when they launched. They were available at MSRP for several weeks (months?) and now it looks more and more like the 5080 would have been a downgrade in many ways. 5-10% performance uplift for fewer features, black screen issues, and melting power cables?

Naaaaahhhhh.

Smart decision for everyone would be to just skip the 50-series entirely. Buy AMD or Intel and whenever Nvidia gets serious about re-entering the gaming market, give them another look.

Comment 16GB isn't enough either. (Score 1) 465

I have a MacPro with 64GB of RAM. If I have "normal" multitasking going on (MS Office, a few browsers, music app, personal and work messaging, Outlook) - I'm using up 25GB right there. I have no idea why it's so inefficient compared to Windows or Linux, but it definitely is.

There's no way I would ever buy a Mac with less than 32GB of RAM. Not unless I was running one program at a time.

This is the current direction of the Linux desktop. Immutable core with atomic updates, containerized and sandboxed applications inside Flatpak/Snap. Easy PWA experience for most web apps.

Check out Fedora Silverblue, OpenSUSE MicroOS, or NixOS/Guix.

That would be a VERY hard target for malware and almost completely cruft-immune.

Comment Gaming Grade (Score 2, Informative) 569

I would absolutely recommend going with a gaming-grade mouse like the Logitech G9, Creative Fata1ity 2020, or one of the new OCZ mice if you need something less expensive. The ones I mentioned have user-adjustable weights, lots of buttons, and ultra-accurate laser tracking. They are wired (reliability, etc...) but you might be able to find something comparable in wireless trim.

Best of luck - a good mouse is a very valuable computing asset.
