Comment Don't Underestimate Frozen Peas (Score 1) 415

I've been dealing with RSI for at least 10 years.

The thing that makes the biggest difference for me is icing my hands, wrists and forearms *nightly* with packages of frozen peas. Do not use any towels wrapped around them, use the packages directly. Place one on the bottom and one on the top of your arm. Use your other hand to apply light pressure. I think I spend about 15 minutes on each arm (5 mins hands, 5 mins wrists, 5 mins forearm). Also, I do this on rare days when I don't use the computer.

It may take you a while to get used to, but it relieves the pain and inflammation tremendously. Everyone is different and has different problems, but I am always surprised at how little this is encouraged.

Of course, this should not be the only thing you do. I'll include my other advice, even if some of it is repitition (groans):
  • You should have an ergonomic workstation. For me, the height of your keyboard and mouse is most crucial. If you need a keyboard drawer, get one. If your employer won't buy you one and install it, do it yourself. I have done this- it is money well spent. When traveling, in a pinch, place the keyboard on your lap instead of having it on a desk. An ergonomic keyboard is also important. A simple split keyboard makes a huge difference for me. You may not require one of those really expensive funky ones. Also important: chair height- your legs should be slightly downward sloping, and monitor: when facing forward your eyes should be looking at the top part of the screen (and don't have the monitor to the side- put it directly in front of you).
  • Periodic stretches. Periodically throughout the day do stretches for your hands, wrists and forearms. Once you get into the habit, it really does not slow you down. You can continue concentrating on your work while you do this, and it does not become distracting.
  • Rest. While difficult, try and not use the computer much on weekends or evenings, especially during this critical time. Once you start healing, you may be able to go back to doing this, but in this initial injury phase, you need time to heal and find a solution that works for you. Make sure you get a full night's sleep, as well, the body likes to use this time to heal. I know, simple stuff, but some people will ignore this, but it is very important and shoud not be underestimated.

Listen to your body. The pain is telling you there is a problem. You need to address the situation and not try and ignore it.
