The facts have come down to this. Java applets (Java on the web) are going to be slow by their nature. The use of a Java plugin helps this some. The Novell GUI components are written and ran using a 1.1.7b compliant virtual machine. This version is slow. I will not argue that, but move this to a newer virtual machine with a Just-in-time compiler or HotSpot the speed difference will be seen. The problems so far with Java is that in its early days it was slow, and many vendors have not updated there products to use a new JVM. I have been using Java since it came out and have seen many of the new Java applications that are starting to be used more in mainstream situations, and the speed is now quite up too most native apps (not as fast but very close);
