AT&T To Offer No-Contract iPhone 193

rfc1394 writes "While the regular price of an iPhone is $199 if you take a 2-year contract with AT&T, if you're willing to pay a lot more you can get one without a contract. An article in InfoWorld mentions that 'Freedom will come with a price — $599 for an 8GB device and $699 for a 16GB — but this will mark the first time consumers in the United States are able to buy an iPhone without being tied down to a two-year contract. The phone probably would still be locked for use only on AT&T's network, said Jupiter Research analyst Michael Gartenberg. But buyers could choose a pay-as-you-go plan for voice service.' The question still remains, does it make any sense to pay that much for a phone that is still locked to AT&T's network even if you aren't bound to a contract?" Update: 07/05 18:21 GMT by T : An anonymous reader suggests that there is a convoluted but possibly cheaper route to an new, unlocked iPhone.

Can Apple Find a European iPhone Partner? 323

pete314 writes "A Vnunet.com article claims that European mobile operators are unwilling to concede to Apple iPhone partnership demands. Several operators went as far as to say they 'will never offer the iPhone.' In the US, Verizon reportedly passed on the device, and AT&T is rumored to have engaged in a revenue-sharing deal that includes monthly payments to Cupertino." In Europe, unlike in the US, Apple has the option of selling the iPhone through its own dealer network without a simlock.

Your plan would flood my neighborhood next to City Park.

The broken canal walls were built in the last 10-15 years--not in the 30s. They failed because they are concrete walls built on top of a shorter dirt levee. The storm surge topped the concrete walls and ate out the dirt below causing the walls to collapse. Had there been more funding to create category 5 height walls perhaps they would have never failed.

Bayou St. John (along bottom in satellite picture) is capped off from the lake by a huge lock and is thus never a threat from flooding. The areas surrounding Bayou St. John flooded because of other levee breaches in the area.

Compartmentalizing the city with internal flood walls would be a better idea that might prevent one or two breaches from inundating the city. There was also a plan proposed to build a giant sea wall along I-10 near Slidell that would prevent storm surges from entering the lake. This might have prevented the storm surge from topping the levees along the canals.
