I would recommend checking out usenet (comp.home.automation) for some really great info.

Also, X-10 operates via the power line carrier protocol (PLC) and is not very reliable. There are several hardwired alternatives by Leviton, OnQ, CutlerHammer and ALC to name a few.

Structured cabling should IMHO include a minimum of three CAT5E cables and two quad-shield RG-6 coax to each and every room in the house - more in the home theater and home office areas.
