If this could be modded +6, it should be. Seriously, does it have to be said again, these human interest stories, however wonderful an example of a petty squabble, are just that: petty squabbles; storm-in-a-teacup territory, because journalists are there to make money. What makes money? How many copies of gossip magazines are sold do you think compared to serious newspapers? How many more tabloid headline articles with "Helena Bonham Carter's plastic leg beats policeman" are read than articles on problems in the west bank?

Not only is piracy unethical but it also tells people like Uwe Boll that there is actually demand for his terrible movies. Netflix streaming is only $8 per month and turns people on to smaller producers. Hollywood and other big producers make the bulk of their funds from theater and retail blu-ray/dvd sales. The profits from Netflix are pennies on the dollar in comparison. Support Netflix, not piracy.

astroengine writes: "The UK Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) in Hawaii has discovered a lone, cool brown dwarf called UGPSJ0722-05. As far as sub-stellar objects go, this is a strange one. For starters, it's the coolest brown dwarf ever discovered (and astronomers using the UKIRT should know, they are making a habit of finding cool brown dwarfs). Secondly, it's close. In fact, it's the closest brown dwarf to Earth, at a distance of only 10 light years. And thirdly, it has an odd spectroscopic signature, leading astronomers to think that this might be the discovery of a whole new class of brown dwarf."

Hugh Pickens writes: "The NY Times reports that after terminating the Constellation program, which was to develop rockets to return humans to the moon, NASA has announced that instead it will focus on developing commercial flights of crew and cargo to the ISS and long-range technology to allow sustained exploration beyond Earth’s orbit, including exploration by humans. "We're talking about technologies that the field has long wished we had but for which we did not have the resources," says NASA administrator, Maj. Gen. Charles F. Bolden Jr. "These are things that don't exist today but we'll make real in the coming years. This budget enables us to plan for a real future in exploration with capabilities that will make amazing things not only possible, but affordable and sustainable." Among the new programs is an effort known as Flagship Technology Demonstrations, intended to test things like orbital fuel depots and using planetary atmospheres instead of braking rockets to land safely, a program that will cost $6 billion over the next five years and will be run by the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Kennedy Space Center in Florida is to get $5.8 billion over five years to develop a commercial program for carrying cargo and astronauts to the space station. These new programs will be “extending the frontiers of exploration beyond the wildest dreams of the early space pioneers,” added Bolden."

Company Makes Paper Out Of Wombat Poo 71

Creative Paper attracted worldwide interest for its paper made of kangaroo droppings in 2005. Well it's been four years and the best and brightest at Creative Paper haven't been sitting on their laurels. What's their great new idea? They have now launched a kind of paper made from wombat poo. Scat-obsessed Darren Simpson from Creative Paper says the paper is green or gold depending on the time of year the droppings are harvested. The wombat paper will be unveiled at an international paper conference in Burnie, Australia later this month.
