The upcoming Hardy Heron release (8.04 LTS) has the latest Xorg, which supposedly has improved multi-monitor detection. And while I think there are some options in Admin (or Prefs) for changing monitors, I find the nvidia-settings panel to work the best. Set it up the way you like, then get it to write its own xorg.conf file

An anonymous reader writes: AMD has announced they are releasing the specs for all new radeon chipsets, and will be working with the open source community to develop a fully functional 2d and 3d graphics driver. AMD appears to be following in Intel's footsteps with upcoming releases. If AMD is successfull NVidia will have real competition in the GNU/Linux gaming arena. While past support by ATI was unsatisfactory the new AMD buyout appears to be having some effect.

theodp writes "Microsoft has applied for a patent for 'securely providing advertising subsidized computer usage.' The application describes how face-recognition webcams and CAPTCHAs can be used in schools to ensure that computer users are paying attention to ads, and the recourse of 'disabling or even repossessing the computer' if they are not."
