They are already doing remakes. The Force Awakens is just a poorly skinned A New Hope. A wet-behind-the-ears naive kid (Luke/Finn) gets himself entangled with a brash pilot (Hans/Poe) and entrusted with vital information in a cute droid (Artoo/BB-8). They encounter a being with considerable untapped Force potential who happens to also be an amazing pilot (Luke/Rey). Yes... kudos to the writers for sticking the characters in a blender and thinking we wouldn't notice. They escape a desert planet (Tatooine/Jaaku) that happened to be the orphan's home (Luke/Rey) pursued by a black masked figure (Vader/Kylo) intent upon finding the vital information. The story culminates to see a weapon of mass destruction (Death Star/Starkiller Base) demonstrate it's power followed by the it being destroyed with a well-placed shot by a pilot (Luke/Poe) in an unlikely weakness. And let's not forget The Last Jedi, another original that just borrows a little from Empire . The Rebels found themselves entrenched on a white planet (Hoth/whatever) as the unstoppable forces (Empire/First Order) close in [albeit at different points during the movie]. Our Jedi (Luke/Rey) is split from the party for a large chuck of the movie, getting reluctant training from a quirky recluse (Yoda/Luke) on some out of the way planet (Dagobah/whatever) that sits on a Dark Force node. Meanwhile, our other protagonists visit an upscale locale (Bespin/whatever), only to find themselves betrayed by a shyster (Lando/whoever). Cue big lightsabre battle between the Jedi (Luke/Rey) and the Sith (Vader/Kylo). Oh... I'm sorry... is it not a remake if you very thinly veil the original characters, plots, etc. that you are regurgitating?

One possible reason that things aren't going according to plan is that there never was a plan in the first place.
