Emacs article on Slashdot?? Cue the "all it needs is a good editor"
comments...

In an effort to understand what sets this project apart from the other
options to the point of being worthy of Slashdot (although "worthy of
Slashdot" has taken on a new meaning in recent years) I checked out the
code and had a look around...

    * A grand total of 3 commits (including 2 one-liners)

      - First commit was less than 2 weeks ago. This is literally some
dude's weekend project from a week and a half ago.

    * About 600 lines of code

    * About 1,300 lines of embedded XPM images

Definitely not noteworthy so far... "Unifying" all of the existing
solutions is fairly cool, but just wrapping them in a few toolbar
buttons is... not that cool...

Oh, and he's an OSX user.

Facebook Data Collection Under Fire Again 49

JohnBert writes "A German privacy protection authority is calling on organizations there to close their Facebook fan pages and remove the social networking site's 'Like' button from their websites, arguing that Facebook harvests data in violation of German and European Union law. The Independent Centre for Privacy Protection (ULD), the privacy protection agency for the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, issued a news release on Friday saying Facebook builds a broad, individualized profile for people who view Facebook content on third-party websites. Data is sent back to Facebook's servers in the U.S., which the agency alleges violates the German Telemedia Act, the German Federal Data Protection Act and the Data Protection Act of Schleswig-Holstein. The agency alleges the data is held by Facebook for two years, and wants website owners in the state to remove links to Facebook by the end of next month or possibly face a fine."

I understand what you're saying, but (despite your snide confidence) I still think you're missing the point: there is no children's section! Wow, all this over the idea of providing a version of youtube targeted at children... I wonder if Sesame Street met such resistance on /. when it launched (how old is that show?)?
The Internet

USA Has More Open Wi-Fi Hotspots Than EU 274

Mark.JUK writes "Some 40% of wireless (Wi-Fi) Internet access hotspots in the USA are unlocked and do not require a security password, which compares with 25% in Europe; according to WeFi based statistics. Across the world, approximately 30% of recorded Wi-Fi access points are unlocked, while some 70% are locked. Nice to see everybody taking security so seriously, then. It should be perfectly possible to 'share' Wi-Fi while using WPA or WPA2 security measures at the same time."
Earth

Earth's Period of Habitability Is Nearly Over 756

xp65 writes "Scientists at this year's XXVIIth General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil agree that we do not yet know how ubiquitous or how fragile life is, but that: 'The Earth's period of habitability is nearly over on a cosmological timescale. In a half to one billion years the Sun will start to be too luminous and warm for water to exist in liquid form on Earth, leading to a runaway greenhouse effect in less than 2 billion years.' Other surprising claims from this conference: that the Sun may not be the ideal kind of star to nurture life, and that the Earth may not be the ideal size."

Agreed. Why is it so wrong and evil to accept the fact that many (definitely not all) stereotypes are actually correct?

It's one thing when you don't have any personal experience or regular interaction with whoever's being "stereotype'd", but I've been around enough humans (about half of which are female) to confirm this one.
