In fact, the Windows Media Video codec has been submitted as a SMPTE standard, under the name VC-1. (Disclaimer: I work at Microsoft, so I won't weigh in on the original article.)
It isn't easy being the parent of a six-year-old. However, it's a pretty small price to pay for having somebody around the house who understands computers.
