Comment Almost bought an Accord but it had antifeatures (Score 1) 156

Hey Honda, you would have sold me an Accord Hybrid last year. I drove it and liked it. But you put a cellular modem in there with no "off" option, and you made the navigation system subscription. So I didn't buy it, and I am still driving a 2007 Acura.

Now why don't you go build an Accord Plug-in Hybrid? Your drivetrain is good and your interior feels Acura grade. Get it done.

In addition to bumping the Node version, we had to add some parameters to tell bitbucket to please give us more RAM during the build process. If your build requires too much RAM, they don't tell you anything is wrong. They just hang for two hours and then die.

In the past I've seen kubernetes pods mysteriously fail to start because some dependency is being fetched from an external site that is down. Getting such an environment external dependency free is quite a bit of work.

Just happened at my work on Friday. NPM based application failed to compile, timed out after two hours on bitbucket. Lots of "old versions" complaints in the log. Developers are going to have fun resolving all the dependency versions.

Needing to change things all the time is the problem, not the solution. The one and only valid reason for frequent updates is security. But if you constantly have to fix security holes then your process is no good.

Good software development is where you rarely have to change things. Because you got it right the first time.

If you must use a Chromium browser on Windows, Supermium is a good alternative. Real uBlock origin works. Supermium supports even Windows 7 machines, so people who like their old computer have a way to go online with it. And since you are not using the default platform, you are less of a malware target.

I had to deal with this recently. OpenVPN did not work even with obfuscation. A configuration which works in China did not work in Russia.

Comment Overcapacity for a one-time replacement market (Score 1) 109

They are cheap because when flat TVs became affordable, everyone in the world wanted to replace their CRT TV. That created a one time demand for a billion or more flat TVs. Now that demand has been satisfied, and most people who have a CRT have one because they like to play retro games on it. However, South Korea and China still have the production capacity they built for that one time replacement wave. I have a C8 (2018) and a 1080P LCD set from around 2011. Both work fine. The C5 is now cheaper than the C8 was. No particular reason to replace either one of them. The C5 might be brighter but the C8 still looks fine in a dark room. There is no used resale market for TVs because new cheap TVs look better than most old expensive TVs. The market is saturated.
