There are much better ways to deal with the abuses. What this will do, is that newly graduated STEM masters and PhD will go back to their home country and we lose out on top talents. These guys eventually become employers in our economy and pay a lot of tax. We all know that our K-12 is in shambles, but instead of trying to be patriotic and fix the problem, these guys look to score quick political points. Our kids are REALLY uncompetitive at the global stage.

LLM is about as reliable as an average new grad. You still need code review and unit testing. The real problem with LLM replacing workers is that in a few decades we'll run out of the experienced engineers to do the code review. Maybe LLMs will be better at that point. For now, definitely use LLM to help add more unit testing.

Working hard means working hard starting at age 6. You don't just go to school to have fun and be popular and make fun of nerds. If you cheat your way through school or barely graduate you'll likely suffer in the age of AI. There's still hope though. Get into trade. Get 2 jobs. Learn personal finances. Start a business. If immigrants with no education can achieve American dreams there's no reason people born here can't.

The mediocre American new grads that cheated their way through school are the collateral damage but we need the fresh talents to keep our technical prowess. It's fashionable to blame H1-B on /. but the data doesn't show that recent new grad unemployment is caused by the visas. H1-B visa in the last 5-6 years have been about the same as previous years if you average out with the huge dip in 2020 and 2021. The truth is that during pandemic there was over-hiring and a lot of companies had a correction which creates a bear market for new grad jobs. Experience talents are still in high demand due to AI, etc.

The problem is that to maintain steady state you need fertility rate of 2.1 per woman and we're no where near that. On the other hand, developing countries are the ones that are carrying the torch for pushing out babies. So as a country, either we open up for immigration or we need to have more babies.
