Submission + - Meta Settles Social Media Harm Claims for $16.68 Billion

mic_f writes: Meta has agreed to pay up to $16.68 billion to settle claims from 29 U.S. states that Facebook and Instagram were deliberately designed to be addictive to children, while misleading users about safety and improperly collecting children's data. The settlement will also require daily usage limits, nighttime restrictions and stronger age controls for younger users. Meta denies wrongdoing.

Reuters reports that the deal “will end a federal trial that had been one of the highest-profile tests yet of allegations that social media companies harmed young users.”, https://www.reuters.com/world/...

The settlement comes amid thousands of similar lawsuits against Meta, TikTok, Snap and YouTube over alleged links between social media and a youth mental-health crisis, following several recent verdicts against Meta.

Submission + - X down due to cyber-attacks (techcrunch.com)

mic_f writes: According to multiple news sites "X", the website formerly known as "Twitter", has been experiencing waves of extensive outage for multiple users today (Monday 10th of March 2025) due to "cyberattacks". According to a statement by Elon Musk the ip-ranges used to accomplish this, in what seems to be a coordinated distributed denial of service (or DDoS), all originated from Ukraine.

"This is amongst the longest X/Twitter outages we've tracked in terms of duration, and the pattern is consistent with a denial of service attack targeting X's infrastructure at scale," he added. (https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c62x5k44rl0o)
