Comment Implanted contacts plus Lasik (Score 1) 550

I have always been very near sighted, around a 10 diopter correction. Lasik on it's own wasn't enough to correct my vision, so I looked into getting a contact lens implanted in my eyes. Scared me thinking about it, but it's been almost five years now, and I've not had any problems. The difference in my life has been huge, I can see when I wake up in the middle of the night, and I can see when I swim. Before this without my glasses or contacts I couldn't read anything more than 4 inches from my face. I do have some glare at night I didn't have before, but having lived this experience now I would definitely do it again.

Wired Writer Disappears, Find Him and Make $5k 135

carp3_noct3m writes "A freelance Wired magazine journalist has decided to see what it is like to disappear from normal life, all while staying on the grid. The catch, is that he is challenging anyone and everyone to find him, take a picture, and speak a special codeword to him. If you can do that, you can make 5000 dollars, which happens to come out of his paycheck for the article he'll be writing. Oh, and to top it all off, whoever finds him gets pictures and interviews in Wired. He has been posting to his Twitter, using TOR for internet, and the Wired website will be posting his credit card transactions."

Computer Reveals Stone Tablet "Handwriting" 42

ewenc writes "A computer technique can tell the difference between ancient Greek inscriptions created by different artisans, a feat that ordinarily consumes years of human scholarship, reports New Scientist. A team of Greek computer scientists created the program after a scholar challenged them to attribute 24 inscriptions to their rightful cutter. The researchers scanned the tablets and constructed an average shape for several Greek letters in every tablet. After comparing the average letters between different tablets, they correctly attributed the inscriptions to six stone-cutters."
