Some tailgaters are the trolls of the highway, and you reallly do not want to get flaimed by one with a temper.
I used to tap the brake when someone closed in too much, too long. At one time a guy in a markless BMW did not take that too well. He started driving in front of me and hit the brakes hard, and made me lose most of my speed while giving me a stare in his mirror, scaring the hell out of me and my family in the car.
Moral of the story, for me at least, when somebody is being a big asshole, he might be an even bigger one.
