IDEs With VIM Text Editing Capability? 193

An anonymous reader writes "I am currently looking to move from text editing with vim to a full fledged IDE with gdb integration, integrated command line, etc. Extending VIM with these capabilities is a mortal sin, so I am looking for a linux based GUI IDE. I do not want to give up the efficient text editing capabilities of VIM though. How do I have my cake and eat it too?"

UK School Introduces Facial Recognition 214

Penguin_me writes "A UK school has quietly introduced new facial recognition systems for registering students in and out of school: 'HIGH-TECH facial recognition technology has swept aside the old-fashioned signing of the register at a school. Sixth-formers will now have their faces scanned as they arrive in the morning at the City of Ely Community College. It is one of the first schools in the UK to trial the new technology with its students. Face Register uses the latest high-tech gadgets to register students in and out of school in just 1.5 seconds.'"

Dead Goldfish Offered The Vote In Illinois 216

Election officials in northern Chicago want to know why voter registration material was sent to Princess, a dead goldfish. "I am just stunned at the level of people compromising the integrity of the voting process," said Lake County Clerk Willard Helander, a Republican, who said she has spotted problems with nearly 1,000 voter registrations this year. Beth Nudelman, who owned Princess, said the fish may have got on a mailing list because the family once filled in her name when they got a second phone line for a computer. When will we recognize a goldfish's right to vote?

The point of this method, I believe, is not that it has come up with a more secure password -- which it most definitely has not -- but rather that it has come up with a password that the user cannot reveal to anyone. Any password, even those that are 20 characters long and full of gibberesh, can be written down or told to someone else, compromising the password.

But if you are trained to recognize specific images, it's much harder to tell someone or write down exactly what the images look like. While you can tell someone that you saw a picture of a duck, when someone who is attacking your account is shown 10 pictures of ducks, they won't know exactly which one you saw.

So, you probably wouldn't want to use it as the only authentication method for your account, but in combination with a traditional password, it can provide an different type of security that is harder to compromise.
