Journal mekkab's Journal: Coachella; Why I'm a Lamer. 12

While putting on an ASH cd to listen to while cleaning house, the Coachella line up came to my head (Yep. They're on it.)

So my wife and I discussed it.

We agreed that it is not possible to dangle a bigger musical carrot in front of our faces; this lineup truly ranks as every band I could possibly want to see (barring those dead or disbanded, with the exception of the fucking Pixies!).

So whats the issue? I don't think festivals are my wife's scene; I'm convinced that she'll probably not have a very good time. Couple that with the 5 hours transit and leaving work on friday and going back to work on monday; It will levy a heavy psychic/mental toll.

And I refuse to go without her.

So I don't know if its growing up or old or what, but thats how it is.

Don't get me wrong- I was miserable at the last festival I went to. I went to Lollapalooza MCMXXVII at Randall's Island for a total of 1 hour: 20 minutes of The Verve Pipe, 40 minutes of getting rained on with no music. Slam poetry is NOT that exciting for that long. I was cold, I was wet, and I was pissed off. I gathered up my friends and said "I'm leaving. Come with or get a ride with someone else. THIS SUCKS." (NOTE: we ended up getting some Bangin' calzone in The Bronx. All's well that ends with good food.)

Also, live sound is a travesty. There are a few shining exceptions (namely, the 9:30 club in DC, which has a bangin' sound system and the intelligent sound boys to go with it- or so I'm told. I've never played there!) But live sound sucks.

I can enjoy being smooshed in a crowd, but only for so long, and that's not my wife's scene.

So thats the shit. Come to the WASH metro area, I'll see ya. But I'm part of a pair, and odds are in favor of her not having a good time. So whats the point?!

P.S.- to all who go- I hope you have a great time, awesome weather, supa-sound, meet really cool people, and stuff.

P.P.S.- K0c: regarding my last JE: when I smacked that guy again, KoC said I gave him a "slashdotting"- quite appropriate!

  • I used to like going to concerts.

Now, I don't. See, it's not me I'm worried about, it's the wife.

I get tired of having to "protect" her from the idiots out there. A huge crush of people freaks her out cause she's short and gets lost in the sea of bodies.

So, I end up pushing jackasses around and usually end up having to threaten some fools before we go.

Plus, 99% of the time the bands just flat out suck.

Ironically, the only two bands who sounded like they were supposed to was Metallica and Dave Matthew
  • I haven't been to a show in 5 years. The last show I saw was Sensfield and Copper in Syracuse NY, just before I moved. I went alone, but met some old friends I hadn't seen in a long long time. I told them I was moving to Baltimore. They all figured they'd never see me again, which so far is true. OH well.

Now, just like you and your wife, I'm part of a pair, and the one show Tracy and I went to (Face To Face and Guttermouth) we had fun, I was down on the floor fucking shit up, but she was in the back. She l
  • Usually something pretty sedate: RL Burnside. Although a young man I just can get into rawking out. And then the whole thing desolves into a passive exercise; one where, unlike television, you are staring at someone. Sure, you're paying for it. But tis an odd thing when it's music and not some stage performance (Broadway, et al). With music there's that whole hipster sense of judgement. That ain't my scene either. So neither the physical or aural elements are my thing.

  • i still like live shows if i really like the band. my wife likes shows. the reason i'm not going is the cash.

the other problem is that it's a festival. while there are several bands i'd probably enjoy watching, there are not many (proportionately) that i'd see if they toured separately. i'd see the pixies and FSoL, and probably kraftwerk. i might see crystal method, the flaming lips, or the cure, but i wouldn't be upset about missing them. so there's a lot that might be a fun time, but not so many mu
  • yes, the sound is usually subpar ( and yes, I thought the sound was superior at 9:30 ), but I expect the sound to suck, so I'm not worried about that -- and the bigger the venue, the more likely the sound will deteriorate with distance -- and vocals taking the hardest hit in most instnaces no matter what.

I want to see people making their music. I want to see them interact with the audience and each other. I want to stand in front, put in my ear plugs, and feel my internal organs vibrate.

    Oooh, and I want
