Comment Contextualized perspectives (Score 1) 214

A lot of confusion arises by trying to find *the* one attribute that is more virtuous than something else, not recognizing that there are usually two opposite perspectives, each being appropriate in a specific context. You may argue that "top-down" is better than "bottom-up", but for a given context, "bottom-up" is going to be the better perspective. You may argue that it's better to optimize development time rather than product quality, but that's also about the context and about listening to the requirements of the customer. Maybe it's about collaboration and working in a team, but for a given context, doing something by yourself is still the way to go. Even when we're talking about how much we earn, it's about recognizing that it may be that we're giving in to corporate oppression rather than pursuing our dreams. Which is the right way to go -- not that easy is it? In the Western philosophies, we want to identify virtues and we want to label these virtues so that we know exactly what are the attributes of the "great developer". In Eastern philosophies, such as Taoism, you will recognize that a mountain has always two sides -- one in the light and one in the darkness -- and both are part of a greater whole.
