Cyberterror Not Yet a Credible Threat, Says Policy Thinktank 165

Trailrunner7 writes "A new report by a Washington policy think tank dismisses out of hand the idea that terrorist groups are currently launching cyber attacks and says that the recent attacks against US and South Korean networks were not damaging enough to be considered serious incidents. The report, written by James Lewis of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, looks at cyberwar through the prism of the Korean attacks, and calls the idea that terrorists have attack capabilities and just aren't using them 'nonsensical.' 'A very rough estimate would say that there is a lag of three and eight years between the capabilities developed by advanced intelligence agencies and the capabilities available for purchase or rental in the cybercrime black market. The evidence for this is partial and anecdotal, but the trend has been consistent for more two decades,' Lewis writes."

I can drive for 8 hours and not leave my State, you insensitive clod. I go to school at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan, USA. Because of the state's bizarre geography, most of the students from out of state (Wisconsin and Minnesota mostly, some Illinois) are from towns closer than my home town.

College Police Think Using Linux Is Suspicious Behavior 1079

FutureDomain writes "The Boston College Campus Police have seized the electronics of a computer science student for allegedly sending an email outing another student. The probable cause? The search warrant application states that he is 'a computer science major' and he uses 'two different operating systems for hiding his illegal activity. One is the regular B.C. operating system and the other is a black screen with white font which he uses prompt commands on.' The EFF is currently representing him."

No one ever said it would be unremovable, and if it was, they sure as hell wouldn't be offering a battery replacement for $180 (Can we say replacement MLB or whole unit swap?). Besides, how many people who are complaining both: a) own/would ideally own a 17-inch MacbookPro and b) swap between working batteries in said computer? The answer is few if any. Don't hate on Apple for doing something different, just because it's different, or it's not what a small portion of the public wants in that product.

Internet Co-inventor Vint Cerf Endorses Obama 713

SEAActionFund writes "Vint Cerf, Google's Chief Internet Evangelist who also happens to be credited with co-founding the Internet, submitted a video to our AVoteforScience YouTube challenge. In it he discusses the importance of net neutrality and endorses Barack Obama specifically because he supports net neutrality (John McCain does not.) The AVoteForScience challenge calls upon scientists to upload videos to YouTube explaining who they are voting for and why. The first two videos were by Cerf and the 2008 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry Marty Chalfie. Any Slashdotters game for explaining who they are voting for and why?" Still waiting for one of the campaigns to ask for my endorsement, which is totally available to whichever campaign offers me the better cabinet seat.
