ATT buys most of Northpoint without the customer base. Why? Because they can.
But mostly because they run the cable and T1 market for broadband. Buy a large company with lots of DSL customers but don't buy the customers so those customers must resort to buying into their other technologies.
Therefore, they get the business customers without having to buy them. And they get them at a higher price point. AND they systematically begin to erode a viable competing technology.
This is all planned. I hate to sound paranoid, but this smacks of a pure conspiracy by ATT.
