Journal mburns's Journal: Fleeing Police 9

Fleeing police can never be justification for lethal force in a high civilization by itself; there must be a visible or known threat with sufficient urgency. Otherwise, lethal force by police only reduces to an implementation of the kind of bigotry which forces the alienation of quite necessary members of society.

  • Yet it's amazing how many people I've met want to blame the victim.
    • Yes, what could the blame be? Any legally founded blame would infringe on the natural rights of this person, I would opine.

I suspect it will come out that the shooter neglected to identify himself in the heat of acting on an excuse for shooting.

      • I'm actually expecting one of the even more silly explanations to turn out true: That the victim was lying face down on the ground and was shot seven times in the head. Or something like that.
        • What a way you have of posing the situation! I suppose the British judges or juries must get involved now. The ruling government might not be able to control the effects of this after all.

          • Well, I don't think it's going to be that extreme. Still, I expect there is at least some damage control going on here.

The entire idea of shooting to kill because someone might be a terrorist is flawed. Since the first world war (if not earler) we've had dead man's switches. The effectiveness of a "shoot to kill" policy is easily negated with these.

You can bet the next round of terrorist suicide bombers will use these.

            • I suspect they already had their switches in place in the July 7th attacks. They were not untrained and the devices were conventional.
              • Putting aside civil liberties for a moment, shoot to kill is moronic and intended for public consumption. I say this because shoot to kill, with or without fail-dead contingency intentions in the bombers, is pointless in an urban environment. In the urban environment - which is where it all happens - you would have to have AI robot snipers installed everywhere for shoot to kill to counter the fail-dead contingency intentions of the suicide bombers.
                • Yes, it is already announced that the bombs were on timers, and that a manual explosion required conspicuous twiddling. This is all for the worse in a rationalization for shooting a suspect.

The explosive used is unstable to shock.
