Even with gold backing currencies, what is that really? It is just a rock with some arbitrary cultural and societal worth backing an equally arbitrary value placed on a piece of paper.
'Price Controls' by governments (and/or in games) can and will be circumvented to establish a market worth. It happens all the time.
