Many of the manufacturers allow you to use online chat for tech support. It is great because every time they ask you the same question over and over again, you can cut and paste the same response.
Here is my last tech chat session with Linksys on a problem we had with the EFG80 NAS.

case id 2624601

MastenZales: Suddenly my dual hd efg80 shows duplicate sharess with ie folders public and public~1 AND the //server no longers brings up a webpage. Also can no longer see the efg with the setup utility

LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Thank you for contacting Linksys chat support. How may I assist you?
MastenZales: hello thanks for answering
MastenZales: As you can see, we cannot get to a web interface on our efg80. It has been working flawlessly for over a year but today we noticed that we cannot access the web admin and that there are dual shares
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: You may try to unplug the power from the efg80.
MastenZales: I have powered off but not unplugged it . does it matter?
MastenZales: i just now downed and unplugged and is now powereing up
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Okay.
MastenZales: it did not fix it
MastenZales: is it possible that the web configuation is corrupted?> How do I get it back? Where is it stored?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Try to access the web-interface of the efg80.
MastenZales: Yes, that is why i contacted tech support. I cannot access the web interface.
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: You may also try to reset the device.
MastenZales: how do I reset it?
MastenZales: and what will I loose in the process?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: In doing that, all the settings that you set on it will be back to the default value.
MastenZales: ip and everything? Will I loose my data and shares?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Yes, but before doing that try to unplug the power from the efg80 for about a minute.
MastenZales: ok
MastenZales: reset is a bit distructive It holds lots of company data.
MastenZales: it is unplugged
MastenZales: where is the config info kept? Is it possible to get access to it?
MastenZales: ok powering it backup
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Thrn try to access the web-interface of the device.
MastenZales: the web interface does not appear.
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Did you changed the IP address on the efg80?
MastenZales: I cannot get to an interface to change the ip. As i explained before, the setup wizard will not access the unit, i cannot access the webinterface. How do you suggest we change the ip?
MastenZales: plus i can access the data with \\server but i see duplicate share names
MastenZales: It must be becase the mirror is broken
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Try to launch your internet explorer and on the address field type http://192.168.0.2.
MastenZales: yes, I do that but i cannot get the web interface to work.
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Are you using a router?
MastenZales: my ip are different but i can see the shares, ping and everything else.
MastenZales: no it is on the local lan
MastenZales: and on the same subnet
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: What is the IP address?
MastenZales: 10.10.10.20
MastenZales: subnetted 255.255.255.0
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: That is the IP address on the efg80?
MastenZales: yes
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: And that still doesn't work?
MastenZales: yes it does not work!
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: How about using the 192.168.0.2 IP address?
MastenZales: it is not set to that ip and if it was , my shares would not be visible from the 10.x subnet
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: You may try to set a static IP address to your pc.
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Set it on the same IP segment of your network.
MastenZales: I have the same problem on all my office pc's
MastenZales: I do not think it is ip related I has to be a failure on the system
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: You may still try to set a static IP address to the pc and try to run the cd.
MastenZales: that does not work
MastenZales: I tried the setup disk already
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Have you tried to set a static IP address on the pc?
MastenZales: I do not understand how that would help? I can see it with unc shares.
MastenZales: The http engine is broke
MastenZales: is there a way to recover the config files thru samba?
MastenZales: what is the default home page //server/cgi-bin/index? or something like that?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: You can recover the config files by accessing its web-interface.
MastenZales: wow, not any way thru the drive shares?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: You can also do thru drive shares.
MastenZales: cool ., where do I look?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: On the share drive.
MastenZales: also in the admin folder ipdata looks like:
MastenZales: IPADDR=10.10.10.20
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
GATEWAY =10.10.10.10
MastenZales: so how do i get to the root share?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: You can only backup the config file under the web-interface of the device but you can backup the files on the share drive.
MastenZales: Yes i agree with you on that.
MastenZales: so when i hit the reset and btw, i do not know where or how to reset, will i loose my data or just my share info?
MastenZales: And can that be reset and / or recovered?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: The reset button is located at the back of the device. This
function will also clear the Instant GigaDrive's administrative
passwords.
MastenZales: does it clear the drive shares?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: No, just the IP address and the password.
MastenZales: ok but the data is safe?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Yes.
MastenZales: ok i will try it. hang on
MastenZales: must hAVE worked as i cannot now connect
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: What is that again?
MastenZales: i reset it and i cannto see it with my setup disk tool
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Try to unplug the power again.
MastenZales: good idea
MastenZales: ok using the setup wizard now
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Okay, what happen?
MastenZales: like
before,
MastenZales: The setup again tells me that it found the gigadrive but will not show drive status nor let me change
MastenZales: the setting
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Are you on the home page of the device right now?
MastenZales: what is the ip to go to now?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: That is 192.168.0.2.
MastenZales: bad sign, I cannto ping 192.168.0.2
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: How about 192.168.1.77?
MastenZales: i set my pc 192.168.0.200
MastenZales: that pings
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Okay, use that one to access the web-interface of the device.
MastenZales: that is the default password?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Try admin.
MastenZales: i cannot still get to the web interface.
MastenZales: only by \\192.168.1.77 but i cannot get access to the shares
MastenZales: so now all my data is unaccessable
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: You can now access the web-interface, right?
MastenZales: bummer
MastenZales: no the web will not come up. I told you tthat I thought he config files were corrupted. now all my data is unaccessable. this is worse. My company is now down.
MastenZales: if you do not know what to do , do not lead customers down this path
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Try to check all the lights that are lit on the efg80.
MastenZales: they are
MastenZales: power
MastenZales: and then lan blinks
MastenZales: that is all
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Try to power off the unit again.
MastenZales: ok
MastenZales: you tell me when to power it back on.
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Okay.
MastenZales: are there any other ideas?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Power it back on now.
MastenZales: ok
MastenZales: it is finishing the self test
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Okay.
MastenZales: it is up
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Try it again.
MastenZales: no web
MastenZales: but can \\192.168.1.77 but it asks for user name and pass. What do I use?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: What is the IP address that you're using?
MastenZales: i just told you.
MastenZales: 192.168.1.77
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: You also need to set the same IP segment on the pc.
MastenZales: Yes that was done. With all due respect, can you escalate this higher? I do not think we are getting anywhere>
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: I understand how you feel but I'm just trying all the possible solutions that we can do to help you.
MastenZales: ok, but how many times do i need to power cycle it. What can i do to get connected to the data now?
MastenZales: is there some one who knows this stuff better?
MastenZales: We are really in a bad place right now. Our accounting data is on this
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: If you are having other software installed in your pc/network like anti-virus software or any other firewall application, kindly disable it to prevent network problem/conflict with your router's firewall.
MastenZales: and I really regret resetting the data
MastenZales: there is NO FIREWALL I AMM ONLY GOING TO TELL YOU THIS ONCE MORE> WE ARE ON THE SAME SIGMENT CAN WEE GET SOMEONE ELSE!!!!
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: What is the operating system of your pc?
MastenZales: i am directly connecting my pc to the device! HAPPY!
MastenZales: Can I call someone?
MastenZales: I am really frustraited. Show me a different trick
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Yes. You can also contact our product department.
MastenZales: hold on./ give me a number,
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: But can you try to reboot the pc first?
MastenZales: yes,. but your acting neurotic. You know it is not the pc nor the ip nor powercycling it.
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: But that is important to establish the communication of your pc to the efg80.
MastenZales: yes, and I can ping it all day long. I can \\192.168.1.177 and get a log on. Do you understand what I am telling you?
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: Try to set the username to administrator and the password is blank.
MastenZales: does not work
LinksysTechSupport Padillo: What is the username and password that you're using before?
MastenZales: i tried old username and password
