QuickTime is irrelevant... (Score 1)

As a basic "translated to" mechanism, quick time offers no real >end user< advantages over other playable formats other than the fact that it's not free which might appeal to you if you are a snob... The qt3 player is a royal pain in the arse that's so code bloated it may as well have been released by MicroSoft... All in all I can honestly say that releasing the source of the server but not the codecs sounds like something MicroSoft would do to show "support" for OSS. Anyway, I suppose Apple should make as many announcements as possible while they are still around.
