I guess I'm part of the minority that actually likes the new Unity desktop. I'm not saying it's perfect, but for the last 10 years or so, no one has addressed the fact that monitors are rectangles, not squares. Anything at the top or bottom of the screen is stealing valuable vertical space, and the menubars need to move to the side. What have Windows and Apple done about this for the last 10 years? Nothing. Gnome got their nose out of joint when Ubuntu suggested the idea of a Unity-style interface, and now look at their interface. It's almost an exact copy! Everyone will have a vertical sidebar of some sort within a couple of years. Ubuntu is just making the (semi-painful) transition first.

First Trek Film Footage Unveiled 320

Ostracus writes "Lost creator JJ Abrams has unveiled footage from his Star Trek prequel at a press event in London. The clips featured US actor Chris Pine as the young Captain Kirk, Heroes star Zachary Quinto as Mr Spock and Simon Pegg as Enterprise engineer Scotty. The audience also saw Leonard Nimoy reprise his role as the older Mr Spock in one of four excerpts from the film. In his introduction, Abrams said he wanted the film to be released in May 2009, to feel 'legitimate and real.' Speaking at London's Vue West End cinema on Tuesday morning, the film-maker admitted he had 'never really been a huge Star Trek fan.'" Note that the article doesn't actually contain the footage, just brief descriptions of it. The video clip included is just the old trailer that we saw many moons ago. But that won't stop me from lusting.

Google Can Predict the Flu 289

An anonymous reader mentions Google Flu Trends, a newly unveiled initiative of Google.org, Google's philanthropic arm. The claim is that this Web service, which aggregates search data to track outbreaks of influenza, can spot disease trends up to 2 weeks before Centers for Disease Control data can. The NYTimes writeup begins: "What if Google knew before anyone else that a fast-spreading flu outbreak was putting you at heightened risk of getting sick? And what if it could alert you, your doctor and your local public health officials before the muscle aches and chills kicked in? That, in essence, is the promise of Google Flu Trends, a new Web tool ... unveiled on Tuesday, right at the start of flu season in the US. Google Flu Trends is based on the simple idea that people who are feeling sick will tend to turn to the Web for information, typing things like 'flu symptoms; or 'muscle aches' into Google. The service tracks such queries and charts their ebb and flow, broken down by regions and states."

Please could someone now focus on the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard? It would be nice to know where things are supposed to be stored. ( /opt or /bin ... I don't care, just decide on one location and stick with it!)
