As Ian Hickson said, the codec should be left undefined just like <img> tags.
I think it would have been very restricting to get locked into one image format for <img> tags. Instead, we can now use different image formats for different types of images and it works pretty well
It is probably best for everyone if there is no codec specification so that all the vendors are willing to support the tag. Then we can just wait and see which codecs work best in the real world.
