Tim Hunt was asked repeatedly, including by the BBC, whether he meant what he said, whether he intended to say what he said and he repeatedly assured people (as reported in reliable media) that he meant exactly what he said. He was not fired. He quit when people objected. This is a 77 year old man who has had a very successful career. The decision to retire rather than go through more chiding for such childish ideas makes perfect sense. But, hey, he is a man and a woman, nay, lots of women took offense, therefore Tim Hunt must be a victim. Even were what he said not an antiquated, laughable position, that he was rude and vulgar enough to say it to a meeting of female science reporters would have been enough to discredit him in his role as an educator.

Has none of you ever worked for local or state government or large corporations where there is a set salary scale for jobs? Outside of the tech bubble, where are all salaries negotiable. If the salaries at Reddit don't match those at other companies, workers will go elsewhere. And it is not all women or just women who either don't negotiate or who are poor at negotiating.

Thank you. There are so many people out there who believe they know security or pentesting and put out their shingle and don't really do anything of value. A good pen tester knows the implications of the results of the test -- and when a test is not necessary. A good security professional can tell from looking at a few indicators (the underlying OS, for instance) just how difficult it will be to break in to a system or network. Starting with either web security or security administration (running an LDAP installation) for a year or so will help you get an understanding of what can go wrong. 30 is not old. Certifications are useful, but only if they are directly about what you plan to do. CISSPs used to be essential, but the number of stunned people with no understanding who passed the test after a 2 week boot camp made it kind of pointless and something of a hindrance. It really does help to enjoy digging through huge piles of crap to find the pony and to have a bit of the grey hat at least. Otherwise, pen testing and security can get dull (or too challenging) really fast.
