The Challenges of Class Balance In MMOGs 209

Karen Hertzberg writes "Balancing classes in MMOGs may be one of the most daunting challenges of the industry. Few games are immune, and no game has ever claimed complete, perfect balance. So how does a developing company deal with the ever-impending demand to keep their games fair in both PvE and PvP environments? Ten Ton Hammer spoke with four industry professionals about the issue in an effort to glean some answers. Age of Conan's Craig Morrison said, 'It is part science and part intuition and experience, I think. We do, of course, have all the ... "spreadsheet" work in the back-end and development tools that calculate as many of the parameters as possible. On top of that, though, you then have the knowledge and skill of the designers involved. Working with a system, you have the general overview of how things interact and how players tend to behave in your game. Sometimes nothing beats spending time in the game itself and actually seeing how the players have been using the skills and abilities you have provided for them. Players are nothing if not inventive, and they never cease to surprise designers with their ingenuity, so it is vital that the designers are also watching and learning themselves.' "

Internet Explorer Not Dead Yet 498

turnitover writes "The future's not all Firefox, Deer Park and Camino, insists Microsoft. At its Mix '06 conference in Las Vegas, reports Microsoft Watch, company execs insisted that there's a bright future for IE. They not only distributed a 'layout-complete' build of IE 7.0, but offered hints about what the new version of the browser geeks love to disdain (yes, it will include ActiveX) will include. Also shown: tools to test IE compatibility. But with what? Standards or IE 6?"

Legal Issues of Opening Up Proprietary Standards? 269

mrjb asks: "The Alesis HD24 is a 24-track, hard disk audio recorder with a built-in 10 megabit FTP server. To improve on file transfer speed, Alesis offers an external Firewire drive with a program called FST/Connect which reads the disks under Windows. I've contacted Alesis about a Linux solution, but none is planned. Also, they are (understandably) not very eager to reveal the file system specs. After a few days of staring at hex codes, I now know enough about the FS to read HD24 IDE disks under Linux (no Firewire required). As I know I benefit from the efforts of the Samba and OpenOffice teams, I'd love to share this info. I'm not, however, the least bit interested in Alesis suing me (in fact, I might want to send them my CV at some point). What would your advice be in such a delicate situation of conflicting interests?"

Elder Scrolls Oblivion Gold 179

Gamespot has word that Bethesda's upcoming release Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has gone gold. It is due out on the 20th. They also have a rundown on some gameplay. From the article: "In true Elder Scrolls fashion, you start Oblivion rotting in a jail cell. Don't worry--Oblivion plunges you into the action and story faster than any Elder Scrolls game to date. We'll get into some minor spoilers here, though many of the following facts have already been revealed publicly. Once again you'll play as a character burdened by destiny to save the world, this time from a demonic invasion from the hellish plane known as Oblivion. Before you know it, you'll go from the dungeon cell to exploring a dank underground, killing rats and assassins while also getting some welcome introductory exposition from Emperor Uriel Septim VII, voiced by Patrick Stewart himself." I know I don't normally mention gold releases, but I'm really looking forward to this one. You know a guy is committed when he buys new RAM for a game.

Utah Games/Porn Law Fails 46

Just a few days after it passed the Utah House of Representatives, the 'Games as Porn' law has died in the Utah Senate. Gamepolitics reports: "The Senate, however, never moved the bill out of committee for a floor vote. Dying a quiet death, HB257 has now been thrown on Utah' s legislative scrap heap - at least for the current session. Perhaps the Utah Senate recognized the obvious constitutional concerns surrounding Hogue's bill. As noted by GamePolitics, a pair of well-known First Amendment scholars savaged HB257 in a recent guest editorial in the Salt Lake Tribune."

I have that issue. My company is in the process of outsourcing most, if not all IT functions to India/China/Brazil where labor costs are 1/4 that of an equally matched US candidate. The logic here, get more for less. For the cost of one headcount in the US, I can get 4 Indian workers of equal education/skill. But how does one keep up their productivity when you know at the end of the day, the work you are doing now will mean a pink slip for you in the future?

Journal Journal: Nothing really

I guess I really don't have a handle on this whole blogging thing.. I read my journal, and very rarely, I'll post something here, for my own amusement..

If anyone should happen to read this, I got a great blogspot. A good friend of mine is hosting the site and I think she'll be a cyberhit in the near distant future..

Let me tell you a bit about her.

Journal Journal: When your job sucks..

Well, its Monday morning, and I decided to stay home. No reason, really. I just couldn't muster the strength to get my ass out of bed this morning. As customary, I called into my office and spoke to my bosses voice mail. Reminded him that he owed me a day and today would be that day.

So in the digital world, they have chosen to give me a voice, a means to be able to express myself beyond the confines of my surburan nightmare. So I use this for good, or should I use this for evil?

At forty, I find myself mad at the delusion our government has corn-fed to us all.

All Americans are too fat, dumb and happy to care what is happening right around them and not motivated enough to make a change!

Let me state a few examples..
