I would have thought the requirments of many new computer games are driving PC sales. I used to use windows 95 on an 11yr old thinkpad for college work until last year. Its hardly news that Windows 2000 is good for ordinary everyday mundane tasks.
I dont think many people buy retail versions on windows anyway. So it may well be that people use 2k on old machines because its good for what they want to do.
