Submission + - The 50th Anniversary of "Star Trek"

Dave Knott writes: Today marks the 50th anniversary of the first television broadcast of Star Trek. The first episode of the science fiction series was aired on September 8, 1966. From its humble beginnings, Star Trek has gone on to become one of the best-loved and most successful television concepts of all time, an enduring pop culture touchstone that changed science fiction forever and spawned multiple series and movies that continue to this day.
What does Star Trek mean to you? Are you a trekkie/trekker? What are your best memories of the series, and how has it affected your life?

I have an android quad core stick PC ($40). I have Office Pro on it, and remote printing is set up. I have a mouse, a keyboard and an external HD connected via USB. It all works great. Not sure exactly what you are looking for, but my kids can do their homework on the stick.

Also, do the kids without PCs have phones? Everything on my stick PC can (and does) run on my android phone.

Of course, this all assumes they have an internet connection...

I want boolean searching on -only- what is visible on a page. None of that metadata stuff. That alone should bypass all those search conglomerators. I don't mind advertisements on the side, but not mixed with the results. I also want the results based only on what I searched for, no paying for higher rankings. That sounds simple enough...

Microsoft: We Offer Up User Data To Law Enforcement 2 Percent of the Time 54

Nerval's Lobster writes "In its second announcement of the kind, Microsoft revealed [Friday] that it received more than 37,000 requests for information on customers of its Skype, Azure and other services from law enforcement agencies around the world. The count does not include requests made using "National Security Letters" issued by the FBI or other U.S. federal agencies that have the force of a warrant or subpoena, albeit without the oversight or control provided by the courts that issue those sorts of orders. During the first six months of 2013, Microsoft received 37,196 requests that covered a total of 66,539 customer accounts. The company refused to provide any information in response to 21 percent of those requests. It provided "non-content data" in response to 77 percent of the requests – non-content data usually includes information such as names or basic subscriber information rather than information on the content of messages or other details describing online activity of those customers. In 2.19 percent of cases, however, Microsoft reports having provided "customer content data" – which includes the content of messages or data stored in accounts owned by Microsoft companies. Ninety-two percent of requests for customer content came from U.S. law-enforcement agencies."

Take the easy way out. Get a Kindle (Nook, whatever) and load everything from the Baen Free Library (http://www.baen.com/library/). Then choose what you like. For light reading, I recommend the Lt. Leary series (With The Lightnings is first). For something a little more thought provoking, try the Belisarius series (An Oblique Approach is first). If you don't like those, there are plenty more to try.

If you want to keep the tech theme but mixed with fantasy, try the Rick Cook Wizardry series. Only a programmer will get all the jokes. A Unix (BSD) programmer. ;-)

Comment Online and cheap. (Score 1) 406

I like to use the Baen Free Library (http://www.baen.com/library/). They have a nice collection of good books that you can read online or download and read later. I also shop at a store called Half Price Books. The Science Fiction Book Club wasn't bad, especially if you wait for the sales. But beware of the shipping costs.

Good luck!
