Independent Games Festival Finalists Announced 20

GameSetWatch notes that the 2007 finalists for the Independent Games Festival have been announced. The IGF is an annual event meant to highlight and praise the work of independent game designers of all stripes; it's run by Slashdot Games editor alumni Simon Carless. Simon puts the spotlight on the Seamus McNally Grand Prize finalists, the 'best of the best' at this year's IGF. My vote goes to World of Goo: "Building off the concepts from Tower Of Goo, one of Kyle Gabler's projects from the Experimental Gameplay Project at CMU, the first game from Bay Area duo 2D Boy uses the hitherto unexplored structural ability of blobs to make an addictive construction-based puzzle action title. There's no release date or demo for the game yet (aside from Tower Of Goo, a kind of 'prequel'), but there's screenshots and a trailer on the official site."

Blizzard and Activision Announce $18.8bn Merger 298

Ebon Praetor writes "The BBC reports that Blizzard and Activision have announced an $18.8bn merger. Activision's CEO, Bobby Kotick, will become the head of the joint company, while Vivendi, Blizzard's current parent company, will become the largest single investor in the new group. Even with the size of the merger, the combined company will still be smaller than the industry giant EA. 'As part of the merger plan, Blizzard will invest $2bn in the new company, while Activision is putting up $1bn. The merged business will be called Activision Blizzard ... Vivendi will be the biggest shareholder in the group.'"

This doesn't surprise me in the least. Up here in Canada, the US Government rushed through tariff legislation to appease their own labour board, why not do the same for Hollywood? Or AOL with their vast empire of Trademark ownership?

When will the US Government ceast this protectionism agenda and work towards a more harmonious system?

I'm also reminded of the Helms-Burton act where One provision forbids executives of companies dealing with Cuba using U.S. property and their families from entering the U.S..

Perhaps I'm being paranoid, but it does make me wonder when all of this is going to end. I live in canada, damnit.. I don't want to be constantly looking over my shoulder for Uncle Sam.
