So it's like when you take your car to the dealer and and you pay $50 get fed a line of BS about the car's computer needing to be replaced, and then you take it to the neighborhood mechanic and pay him $10 to replace a spark plug. If a good mechanic was used in the first place, only one guy would get paid. It's a win-win!

And for those of you who are wanting to tell me "but Firefox just joins all startups into the same process and only gives you a new window". Well, I defeated that by dynamically creating a new home directory on the fly for each startup, populating it with a template set of files Firefox expects, setting the HOME environment variable to that path, and starting the Firefox process. So the scanning of my browser is limited to just what this one I use for Slashdot has visited recently.

If you didn't want to go through all of that hassle, you could have just done:
env MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 firefox --ProfileManager
It starts a new firefox instance and gives you the option of creating a new profile for a site. Comes in handy for me.

MTV's Multiplayer Blog is running an interesting piece about what constitutes a spoiler in video games. The interactivity of a video games, argues the author, often makes it necessary to spoil or reveal at least general characteristics of a game during a review or other informative article. He says, "I believe that writing about games is overly careful. I believe that game scripts, game plots and game endings have been given a pass because critics tend to avoid them or address them with the most ginger touch. I'd at least like the discussion about spoilers to cease being so binary. There is room between avoiding mentioning a plot event and reporting its main details. There is value to addressing anything and everything that is most interesting in a game, and value in doing it with words that express meaning rather than those designed to mask it." So, what do you consider a spoiler for a video game, and how do they affect your enjoyment of the game?

Hogwash McFly writes "My boss gave me one of those USB-powered red LED scrolling displays as a Christmas gift, and while cycling the usual 'I read your emails' and 'ID10T Error' messages will be entertaining for a day or two, I was wondering if it could be put to more constructive uses. The configuration file is plaintext and supports different scroll speeds, flashing, bitmaps, and WAV sounds. The font is defined as 5x5 pixels per character, also stored in plaintext as 5 hex values, one for each vertical line of pixels. A dynamically generated message could prove useful in my day-to-day work on the helpdesk, but are there any interesting uses beyond network notifications and news feeds?"

Silverlight On the Way To Linux 475

Afforess writes "For the past two years Microsoft and Novell have been working on the 'Moonlight' project. It is a runtime library for websites that run Silverlight. It should allow PCs running Linux to view sites that use Siverlight. Betanews reports 'In the next stage of what has turned out to be a more successful project than even its creators envisioned, the public beta of Moonlight — a runtime library for Linux supporting sites that expect Silverlight — is expected within days.' Moonlight 2.0 is already in the works."
