It's not a recruitment issue. It is a licensing issue. The current pathway to get a license as an overseas trained doctor is ridiculous and purposely obstructive and expensive. The Medical Council of Canada holds over 50 million in assets yet says it takes up to 14 weeks just to process a source verification of one document. That's one of several steps in the process. An external audit would go a long way but this issue never even makes it into the media. It just get's portraited as Canada doesn't train enough doctors. The same stupid articles over and over without any investigation into why more skilled doctors are not coming.

As a Canadian that trained in a country overseas, I had to re-sit my exams for my specialty in Canada (no easy task). I also had to pass the LMCC certification. You would think I could get a license near instantly being a Canadian citizen who has passed all the Canadian exams. However, it's an incredibly obstructive process with fees and excessive delays at every step. An example is that the Medical Council of Canada states up to 14 weeks to source verify a document. It takes several months to get a provincial license even if you tic every required box. It's the MCC and the provincial branches of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons that have plenty of blame for the current shortages. However, they never get mentioned. It's always portraited as not enough med student positions or a government funding issue. That doesn't explain how fully qualified doctors trained in equivalent countries are turned away on a regular basis or simply give up because the frustrating process takes years and often ends up costing over 10k.

I think that some people are possibly posting out of bitterness when mentioning the original poster was only concerned with money. I think the main point he was making is that interns and residents working 80+ hours a week is ridiculous, unsafe and actually makes for an nasty work environment that can have effects on patients. There is another level to this altogether though. It could be argued that doctors are supposed to understand what a healthy balanced life is. The field of Medicine can hardly serve as a role model for this in its present state. And to those saying that whining about 55k is ridiculous. You also have to look at the debt someone going to med school takes on. If you owed up to 250k and were working 80+ hours a week making 55k, don't you think such a miserable existence would negatively affect your behavior?
