Organized workers leverage is being organized. You know work stoppages, strikes, etc. While I am not a fan of unions for many reasons the one thing that is hard to argue against is that employment in America has always been divide and conquer.
How many people still believe discussing their salary/compensation with each other is ILLEGAL or against a company policy...
I agree the union may not be able to demonstrate a reason that is sufficient enough for Apple, but they do not have to do that. Unionized workers are able to shift into the same position employers in with regard to leverage.
Employers: Do this thing/accept these conditions or we will find someone else that will.
Unions: Agree to these terms or continue to lose money while work is stopped.
May not be fair or right but at least is equitable.
Best part is the first union area is a threat of the viral spread. When a small area unionizes Apple could simply say we are going to leave that area but if all of retail unionizes...
Then pleasing Wall Street is not just about growth but showing that Apple has solved it's union problem. The pressure to compromise would come from the market as well as the union. Having a work stoppage in retail would sway confidence in Apple's growth potential the longer it goes on.
While unions have a lot of negatives the one thing they can do is level the employer/employee playing field, which currently is probably at least as necessary as it was in the black lung mining days.
