Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory are trying to develop autonomous software-based robots, dubbed "cybots," for network monitoring and defense. "A cybot is intended to work with other cybots, continue their mission or regenerate when necessary," says Joe Trien, one of the developers on the Ubiquitous Network Transient Autonomous Mission Entities (UNTAME) project.

My wife has been doing it for years at the World Bank. She really loves it. No managers ever force her the work the extra day, which she uses for errands & personal stuff, and anyway extra work means overtime at her level. Of course the WB is non-profit, so there is little incentive for manager abuse, and a strong culture against it.
